The weather outside was frightful, but not as frightful as the South Carolina State basketball team in Carver Hawkeye Arena. Frightful as in frightfully bad.
How bad were they? Iowa's Devyn Marble scored 27 points in just 22 minutes of action. He took a season with just under 14 minutes left in the game and never returned. South Carolina finally caught up to Marble's point total with 12:37 left to play in the game.
Iowa won the game 90-46 and Marble's offensive outburst in the first half was the story. He had 19 points in the first half on 4 of 6 shooting from three point range. In the second half, or the seven minutes of the second half he played, he added two more three pointers. He was 6 of 8 from three on the game and is 10 of 17 from long range over his last two games. He scored 30 points against UNI on Saturday giving him 57 points in his last 64 minutes of floor time.
Marble entered the game averaging 15.1 points per game and that will move to 16.1 through 12 games. He entered the game shooting 35.9% from three (14-39) and is now 20 of 47, which is is 42.6%.
In my opinion, Marble needed to become a more consistent shooter from range this year if he was to make that next big leap in his career. He started slowly and these last two games have taken his percentage from 33.3 (10-30 through 10 games) to 43.6%. He has nine and eight three-point attempts in his last two games where five attempts was his season high prior to the game against UNI. Marble will wake up on Thursday as the 4th leading scorer in the Big Ten as far as per game average goes.
As a team, Iowa was 31-63 from the floor (49.2%) and 11 of 23 from the three-point line. They were just 17-27 from the free-throw line and outrebounded South Carolina State 56-36. Yes, that is a lot of rebounds. Iowa had six blocks with Gabe Olaseni getting four of them. The Hawks had 22 assists on their 31 field goals with Mike Gesell dishing out a career best eight to just one turnover (he also had five points). Iowa held SCS to 18 of 71 shooting (25.4%) and just 5-24 from three.
12 different players scored for Iowa, but only Marble was in double figures. Aaron White had nine points and seven boards while Adam Woodbury scored six points and had a career best nine rebounds. Olaseni had six points and 10 rebounds to go with his four blocks.
Josh Oglesby did not play in this game and Scott Dochterman tweeted that he had a minor shoulder injury that Iowa didn't want to take a chance with.
Fran McCaffery is now 39-39 at Iowa and has more wins than Todd Lickliter did in 18 fewer games. Iowa's 10-2 start is their best to begin a season since the 2004-2005 began that season 12-1.
Iowa will close out the non-conference portion of their season on Saturday when they host Coppin State, who is 3-9 on the season. The game will tip off at 12:06pm and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
