Hawkeyes Cruise in London Opener; Jok leads with 22

I just watched Fran's interview about today's game on YouTube and he described Gabe Oleseni as a "dominant player". While I think Oleseni has the highest ceiling of anyone on our roster I'm not sure I'd call him dominant. Fran's not one temper expectations for his players! ;)

Jok is a lock down defender on defense...when he wants to be. I'm guessing Fran won't allow it to be optional. Jok also tries to make plays from out of position when he's beat and picks up fouls. Again...I think Fran will coach him away from this.

I was concerned when we recruited and signed Jok...only because of his extensive history of injuries. When he's healthy he's an incredible talent and the sky is the limit IMO. I'm glad we got him because we now have the depth should Jok go down with an injury. From what I've been seeing and hearing over the last 12 months he seems to have put the injury bug behind him and has his A game back. If he stays healthy while at Iowa he will do some very special things. I'm looking forward to enjoying the ride.

Pete really doesn't have an extensive history of injuries. He broke his wrist during his Freshman HS season and then had the torn patellar tendon the summer following that was initially incorrectly diagnosed that he played with for a year and then finally had repaired. Everything beyond that has been recovery and rehab from the tendon tear. At this point his ceiling is where he wants it to be and about how much he wants to put in at both ends of the court, the talent is there. Let's hope he has a chip on his shoulder and wants to show all the blue blood schools that they made a mistake in backing off, if so we're in for a fun ride.

There was also a back injury and another wrist injury. He's had 4 injuries that kept him from playing basketball. I love the kid and I'm glad he's a Hawk...but I know he's had 4 injuries since age 14. I think those are behind him and expect big things.

Edit: There was only 1 wrist injury...thinking of 2 encounters with Pete but it was the same injury. My bad. There definitely was a back injury. I was standing next to him when he couldn't bend down to pick up a ball.

Temper nothing Miller; Jok is probably the most college ready player Iowa has recruited in the last decade.

Agreed. He has a great all around game. He's going to be very difficult for other teams to defend. Especially with the supporting cast he will have around him. I am going to thoroughly enjoy watching him play over the next 4 years.

so, did they play tonight? i thought they were going to...

Yeah, Hawks won 105-72. They only lead by 3 late in the first half and Jok scored 6 quick ones going into half. Oglesby led a surge in the beginning of the second half to start pulling away. Josh had 5 treys and Jok finished with 18. They leave for Paris in the morning and play on Friday against supposedly better talent.

I often forget about Tyler Smith. I would probably give the edge to Smith but not by much. Smith has/had baggage.

That's not part of the equation here. We're talking about physical readiness. In that department, Smith is the best we've had since Ricky Davis. And it's not all that close.
