Hawkeyes Add Middle TN State to '19 Schedule

The ISU game is a Big Ten like game in terms of intensity and the evironment. It gets them ready for Big Ten. The environment for that game is certainly more intense than it is for an Indiana or Purdue. Brother against brother. I go to it every year no matter here or in Ames and it is a great game to attend and everyone is into it. Love it more when it is a late game.

Anyone remember we just got obliterated by Florida just months ago, but yeah lets play teams like that early in the year. I'm sure that would go real well on average.

I don't get excited for these kinds of games either, but seems like they are a necessity for now. And it will be a kids discounted tickets game for sure. One good thing Iowa does for games like that.

With a 4 team playoff, Iowa never gets in without winning Big ten title game, and at most can have one respectable loss that occurred during the regular season. If not that we aren't getting in no matter who we played.

Iowa would have to have the history of OSU to be in even an 8 team playoff without winning in Indy. Playing a powerhouse team in OOC would be a guaranteed loss until this program steps it up a notch, especially on offense.

This isn't an Iowa thing guys. This is a college football thing. You guys have to quit living 30+ years ago in the past. Football is scheduled differently now than it was. Look at Ohio St. non conference schedule in the past:

1980: Syracuse, Arizona St., UCLA
1981: Duke, Stanford, Florida St.
1982: Daylor, Stanford, Florida St.
1983: Oregon Oklahoma (9 conference games this year?)
1984: Oregon St. Washington St.

Heck look at Minnesota's non conference schedule

1980: Missouri, Miss. St. and Air Force
1981: Pitt, Syracuse
1982: Syracuse, Pitt
1983: Missouri, Stanford
1984: Missouri, Stanford
1985: USC, S. Illinois, Nebraska
1986: Louisville, USC, Nebraska

That is just how schedules were back then. There were a lot of independent teams to schedule with. The game has changed, almost all the schools schedule 2 MAC level teams or worse. Iowa is no different, and I actually like that we play 9 conference games now, as I'd rather play Penn St., MSU, Michigan, OSU more often than Pitt or Arizona St.

Imagine if the players knew that they'd be going to play UNC or Miami or Auburn or UCLA, Utah or road trip to Kyle Field (Texas A&M) or Eugene OR.

I don't mean to say that they are not motivated. I am certain that they are motivated. At the same time, these kinds of games create a lot of intensity.

There are of course competing priorities. Business dictates a home game.

I wonder.... Does a home game generate more revenue than a big time away game - given that TV has become such a large part of the calculus?

I like seeing someone different on the schedule, however what I really want is all preseason games to be power 5 teams.

Over the past few years I have been giving my preseason tickets to family because I hate going to the blow out games with the exception of iowa state, it is too much fun to watch them loose to pass up

With the BTN/ESPN/Fox deals, pretty much every conference game is the money maker. It's the home games where the issues come in. ISU, for example, has variable TV coverage because of Big XII rights. North Texas is thrilled just to be ON broadcast of any kind. Wyoming probably gets decent coverage throughout the year. So those two are home games covered either by BTN or ESPN/Fox.

The fine line comes in with folks deciding if they want to pay big bucks to see a guaranteed win, or would rather pay it for "big" games.

Personally, coming from Florida, I either want a "sure" win or a HUGE marquee-type game, I sure ain't gonna go through the hassles to see North Texas, but I COULD Wyoming being a good game. Unless, of course, we lose.
