HawkeyeGameFilm: Open Practice Notebook

HawkeyeGameFilm took in Iowa's open practice and had his notebook in tow. Here are several of this thoughts in the order he took the notes...

-Lots of zone running plays. Very similar running scheme on O so far.
-Hitchens very active
-Darian Cooper struggling to beat double teams, 1st D line getting manhandled, LBs not staying clean
-2nd DL tougher against run early, starting to give up cut-backs tho
-Lot of 4-3 Under from D, Some confusion on deep crosser in secondary, Man responsibility not their comfort zone yet.
-58 getting under pads, good drive blocker, good leverage - Eric Simmons, Juco Center from Iowa Western
Sprint out looks on offense, west coast feel to it. JVB not great on the move
-Hamilton failed to read blitz on pop pass, JVB hit'm in the face & he wasn't ready, probably some system learning still going on

-OL Boffelli & Blythe at G, Tobin 3rd guard
-Zone blitz looks, Darian Cooper dropped into slant zone Cooper controlled by double team on zone run, initial push got stoned
-Louis Trinca-Pasat (LTP) showing some decent burst, good first step quickness, isn't able to fight through if initial burst is stopped though

-Hillyer, 17, a big body, does a good job positioning himself, boxes out smaller DBs, limited burst though
-65- Walsh showing good hand usage, locked up Hardy on zone, hands inside but turned him with grip, good tech

-Lomax very sharp CB, quick feet & savvy reads. Blew up a screen, easy read, WR took a jab step and then came horizontal inside
-Alston all over the HB screen. Good read. Not a great athlete but good enough to match with instincts.
-Donatell looks better this year, can hit, but not a great ATH tho

-Morris knifed in a gap to blow up a run. Not something you saw very often last year, came hard to the A gap on the snap.
-CJ in the flats a lot, big target, huge catch radius. TE routes are more QB friendly in Davis's system.

-HKK (Henry Kreiger-Koble) looks good as a pass catching TE. Very fluid good pass catcher. Gives good effort as a blocker but isn't real physical yet.
-Lot of zone looks still. No man blocking, same philosophy, combo-chip+read 2nd level
-75 getting rolled a lot
-Sokol careless pass gets picked by Castillo, Doesn't have a rocket arm, average velocity, kind of a slinger not a thrower

LIVE SEGMENT

-4-3 Under base D
-Great coverage looks by safeties, Nico with good discipline in reads
-Helmet popper by Nico Law in run support, Lot of closing speed, looks like Bernstine
-LBs with a lot of tight coverage over the middle. reading routes and matching steps with ease
-Jordan Lomax can run, perfect technique on Hillyer down the sideline on the fade, speed kept him in front and turned and played the ball. Very good play.

-Miller overcommitted to the fill coverage on CB blitz, bit on stalk-block fake & shumpert blew by him, became a big gainer on skinny post, mistake there. Shumpert finally caught the deep ball as well
-Bigach shed Scherff & makes run stop, Scherff was a bit high and lost control. Needs to focus on keeping his pad level down
-Flat coverage by Hyde: sunk under 2nd level route and allowed flat completion in Cover 2, looks like responsibilities/rules much the same in C2 in new scheme
-Tight goal-line coverage by Miller, ran well with KMM to corner, challenged throw & closed window

-Bullock top end speed solid, accelerates well - Big TD break showed a little lateral agility too.
-Some footwork issues for Rudock on drops, scuffing his feet on the turf a lot, 3 or 4 instances of it.
-OL depth looks very good, 2s & 3s well coached, good leverage
-Poor decision by Rudock, threw into traffic after holding the ball. Good throwing mechanics but lacks
arm to put it into a mailbox 30+ yards down field
-Shumpert hit & miss all day, fumbled, drops, makes a few great grabs. False start penalty isn't gonna earn him brownie points either

-Lot of fundamental west coast schemes on offense, double outs, red rollouts, slant variations, not seeing many read routes by WRs today. Lot of static stuff. Likely a product of spring system being simplified.
-Lot of progression usage by JVB, did a good job not throwing into trouble throughout 2 min drill. Took what was there.
-Route confusion by WRs on JVB's INT. Great read by Lowery, read QBs eyes and zoned off outside WR and took deep ball to inside WR away for the INT. PI on Law negates it, but a good play by Lowery nonetheless.
-LTP quick off the line in 2 min drill, not able to shoot gaps tho
-LBs tough underneath in coverage again. Very impressive shadowing routes underneath.
-Nickel on 4th down, Castillo in, Lowery to slot, press cov

this is just what i wanted to see from hawkeyegamefilm. he gives good idea of what we have from a perspective that most dont have (but still think they do).

love that we are sticking with the kf zone blocking (never thought we wouldnt). like that it sounds like more west coast passing but for that to work we need to get to the point where option routes are used. sounds like they have a long way to go on the dl but have some skill to work with. have to hope that alvis and davis can give us something so cooper can get singled.

for hawkeyegamefilm:

do you think the blitz pick up problems from the offenses had to do with communication from the qbs not seeing? the linemen not seeing it? or missing rogers from the lineup?

i see rogers as being a guy to lean on as a blocker in the passing game as the other rbs havent seen the field much and most good rbs dont have to block much in hs. but we know it is major to kf for them to pick up the blitz or he wont play them unless he has to.

I tell you who looked like a big SOB, was Nolan MacMillan. I don't know what his talent level is, but he appears to have NFL size.

he was starting prior to his sports hernia last year, or was that two years ago already?

2 years. He and Gettis went down and the Hawks went into the tank. Nolan was the next great Hawk lineman, but sports hernias are no laughing matter. As I have said, up to 35% of people with that condition never play competitive sports again.

He's another great 3 start that really has some talent. If he can come back from the sports hernia (thats one that some never really get back to form after) he will be a solid tackle or guard. He takes up space and blocks well

Gonna need a little more lead in the pencil to play well. Another year with Doyle

Jon based on what you've seen in spring and last year what is your bet on starting and two deep on DL? The way I see it that is our greatest area to overcome this year. You agree with that? Interested in your and other thoughts.

From your notes it sounds like we need Jaleel or Faith or maybe both to come in and contribute, which isn't real likely in those spots.

counting on a true freshman to contribute on the DL is like counting on a Vegas hooker not to grab your wallet you left lying on the nightstand while you take a long relaxing **** in the bathroom.

TE routes are more QB friendly in Davis's system.

I am glad to hear this. I was hoping for this and perhaps friendlier routes for WRs and RBs. I said all last year that KOK needed to get easier, higher percentage throws for JVB especially in the start of games to get him comfortable and in rhythm.

Hawkeyegame film is an expert, and I'm not.

I'd really like him to explain out 1st team d line getting manhandled though. I think manhandled is a bit strong for what happened yesterday.

I don't recall many instances of the DL getting any penetration when D not in blitz drills.

A two deep seems about impossible to put together right now.

I think Cooper has a chance to start...Bigach and Gaglione as well...Alvis will if he is 100% in August. Carl Davis is a huge wildcard and greatly needed. After that it's a crap shoot. While I may not have used Duff's analogy related to freshman DL playing, I concur with the sentiment; it's usually not a good thing.

I thought I saw our D line in the backfield at least once when the blitz wasn't on.

Also, in the early scrimmage they held the offense to 3 and out twice.

I guess everyone who watches this stuff closer than myself says our D Line will be weak, and I don't have any reason to argue, But Hlas said potentially the weakest D Line in 25 years.

I'm just not buying those kinds of predictions.

I'd say the blitz issues were a combination of factors:
1) Little experience at RB & Rogers out
2) New System verbage/Communication
3) Spring jitters

Rogers was very consistent in blitz pickup last year when he got into the swing of things. In addition to being very stout picking up a blitzer, he rarely make mistakes as well. He would make the adjustments and showed good awareness; even to crossing over to the other side of the pocket to get a blitzer.

I agree FWIW. The offense, when they went to a situational drill at the end, had trouble getting plays off. They were off for the entire practice.

Lots of drilling on throwing the ball underneath though.

I still think the D Line wasn't as ugly as others think it was however.
