Hawkeye Punters Hoping Psychology Leads to Better Results

Give them each 5 punts in game situations. If neither of them is averaging at least 40 yards per punt, sit them, and let Stanley do it. He is averaging 37 yards per punt on only 3 career attempts and if my memory is correct at least one of those was a pooch kick inside the 10. A QB in punt formation adds a whole new element for the defense to think about besides a punt return.

I hope people are joking about finding someone off the street who can be a better punter than what's currently on the roster. There's no need to go overboard.

I hope you're right, but we'll see. 106 out of 107 doesn't exactly inspire confidence in a guy

Gersonde averaged more than 42 yards per punt in limited duty last year before being injured. Rastetter looked better late last year.

Yes, they have to prove it. It's a concern, for sure.

They have addressed the issue by dedicating a full-time coach to special teams and working with a sports psychologist. That was the point of the story, which I'm sure all of you read before commenting. ;)

Yeah, I know you mentioned him being one spot away from last place. Do you really believe there isn't someone off the street that could punt better than Rastetter?

No. I don't. Do you? How easy do you think it is to punt a football? Come on, man.

This may come as a shock, but players do improve through working at it in college football. It's a crazy concept, I know.

David Bradley was brutal his first year as a starting punter but got increasingly better as his career went on.

Again, Gersonde averaged over 42 yards a punt last year. We haven't even seen him punt for an extended period of time.

But, yeah, we'll get someone off the flag football team to be a better punter.
