Hawkeye, NFL Draft Bits and Pieces

As has been said many many many many times. Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick. Nobody was gushing over Tom. Ricky Stanzi and Tom Brady have similar stats for their senior season(Stanzi a little better).

Where he goes in the draft makes no difference to US. Only makes a difference to HIS pocket. So who cares where he goes, as long as he gets a shot.

Keep the faith that he will be the next Brady...why not.

Hope he goes to the Vikings.

If he goes to the Vikings, why would we want him to be the next Brady?

I get it...so you're either a Bears or a Packers fan, cool. I'm a vikings fan so bring me Stanzi. You can have Jay "who cares" Cutler. If you are a Packer fan then lucky you. Rogers is a beast.

Also bring me Bob sanders, Clayborn, and Ballard.

In Iowa career statistics, Stanzi is fourth in completions (542) and third in attempts (907), yards (7,377), touchdowns (56) and total offense (7,373). Stanzi is just the third Big Ten quarterback to start and win three bowl games (Mark Herrmann, Purdue and Brooks Bollinger, Wisconsin). His pass efficiency rating of 157.63 ranks best in school history and his total offense (2,998) is third best for a season. Stanzi is the only starting quarterback to beat Penn State three times in a career.

He also has the second most wins ever by an Iowa QB.

This year, he had 25 TD to 6 INT

I think Ricky is better than just 'above average'

Ricky had a solid season just got let down by some teammates he may turn out to be a solid NFL QB nobody really knows at this point. It will be a matter of how hard he works and improves.

Why does everyone keep going to Brady? Stanzi is not Tom Brady. There will never be another Tom Brady. He is like the ultimate outlier. You cannot expect those kinds of results to simply replicate over and over. Yeah, there are late round QBs like Warner, and Romo, and Cassel that have success, but they are only like 5% of the the late round QBs that get drafted.

People keep pointing to Brady, when history overwhelmingly points to QBs selected in the mid rounds ending up like Brian Brohm, John David Booty, Colt Brennan, Drew Stanton...I could go on. In fact, go look at a list of drafts by year, from three years ago and go back, and see how many of those mid to late round QBs you remember(Like I just did).

Tell me where the Tom Bradys are. I'm not saying Stanzi won't get picked, or that he won't even matter when he gets picked, but don't compare him to Brady.

Weird, most people I know have the opposite view.

It's obviously still a crapshoot either way. But it seems like Kiper is closer to the mark than McShay most of the time. McShay was still pimping Locker until the Senior Bowl, when he finally saw what the rest of the world had been seeing for 4 years.

Warner and Romo were not drafted at all. It sometimes is an advantage to be undrafted than drafted late.

I continue to be amazed at the Gabbert love.
Dude hasn't taken a snap under center, EVER!
Throws 90% of his passes to pre-determined 7yd spots.

Locker as well, 57% completion in college.
Tighter windows, quicker decisions and people really think he's going to be better than that?

I might take one of these two in the 3rd round but no way in the world in the first.

I will be interested in how Kaepernick and Dalton end up grading out at the combine. Those two are the most intriguing to me. Not saying they are the best, but I just think they are the biggest wildcards.

So far, in the NFL, not a single QB who ran the spread has panned out to be a pro-bowler. Some have made starts for awhile but none have not panned out to become super stars.

My main concern with Stanzi (and I keep emphasizing this) is his ability to handle pressure. Last year, his tendency was to pull the ball down along with his eyes and only look for the dump down (or get sacked). He often did this even when there was no pressure, as his internal alarm went off after a few seconds. Yes, his interceptions were down and that was good, but he also crumbled under pressure at the end of games last year, not willing to take chances.
This would be my biggest concern as a pro scout, as nearly every play in the NFL involves pressure coming from somewhere and the ability to slide and adjust in the pocket is critical while keeping your eyes down field. Brady is a master at this and this is what really makes him so special.

IMO the thing that helps Stanzi in this draft is that teams know what they are getting in him. He has NFL size, ran a pro-style offense, and consistently won games. Sure, Locker has athleticism, Mallet has a bazooka arm, Gabbert has stats, and Newton has 1 great year. They're all missing/lacking something that makes them a lock to be a franchise QB. Stanzi may never be an All-Pro but he should stick in the NFL longer than other Hawkeye QB. I will go as far as saying that his career will last longer than half of the QBs picked ahead of him.

There was a guy who got compared to stanzi a lot. I remember them saying he didn't have the arm strength, couldn't make all the throws, and all the other junk they say about stanzi. He played for my San Francisco 49ers and turned out all right. He was only the greatest qb in the history of the nfl. His name Joe Montana baby. Very comparable in many ways to Stanzi as a thrower. Now do I think stanzi will become the player Joe was, no way, but is it possible, sure, so lets watch and enjoy the ride. Plus if the 49ers want to draft Stanzi, it would make my year. Oh and if they want to pick up bob sanders cheap that would be even better.

Apparently this guy is dumb and has no idea what he's talking about after sunday. Geez Stanzi way to take my favorable post about ya and really drop off the planet earth. Seriously! We've all seen those moments like talked about for him on Sunday where he throws everything too low and can't hit anybody in the flat, I was really hoping he'd show his best at the combine. OUCH!!!!!!! Maybe I should have compared him to Elvis Grbac
