Hawkeye linebacker situation unsettled, but promising

I like how this worked out. This competition will lead to a lot of depth. I am glad to hear that the freshmen are really stepping up.

Could be some bad news on the lber front....Jewell has evidently broken his hand in practice and will have surgery....not sure if he is out for the season, but cannot be positive for this thin position group.

Can't he play with a cast/club?

He probably can but I hate when linebackers play with the cast.

How are you supposed to fight off blockers with one hand and any chance of an interception is gone.

as a packers fan I watched clay Matthews play with one and be a total non factor.

i'd rather stick next man in win 2 good hands. I'd be willing to bet the next guy with the 2 good hands is a better option.

All the more reason why, as much as ever under KirkFer, he needs to turn the offense loose and go win some games.

I'm not sold on the D:
1) Obviously, loss of 3 really good, experienced Lb's. They were the difference over that last 1/3 of last season. Having this unit "unsettled" (whether that's an injury, position battle or emotional struggles) is not what you want out of your least experienced unit; especially in the passing game.
2) With the exception of King, not a lot of confidence in the back 4 - Mabin and Lomax and Lowdermilk, oh my!
3) The front 4 are pretty good but I think they are what they are and what you've seen is what you'll get. Already down a good one (Cooper), which is crucial to success of the unit when you're running 300#-ers.

It true, this means that we will have to be even more stout on 1st down and then use a possible nickel package since we had 3 guys they were high on for the corner position opposite of King. Draper and Flemming may get more of an opportunity now if nickel is something Iowa uses.
