You think both of the new RBs will play this year? I don't honestly hope so. As fired up for having Goodson as I am I kinda hope we don't need him this year. We have 3 to be juniors all capable. Plus Geil who redshirted this year and Evans. Unless any of them get hurt/leave I wouldn't want to burn the newbies redshirts. I have confidence in the backs we have doing well. I want to see more Young and Sargent this year with less of IKM. But that's just me. I think Young is capable of being a bell cow kind of back. He should get no less then 15 touches a game. With the others being split however they want.Sleeper - Huston

Upside - Ezra
I thought IKM when he was in there missed some running lanes/cutback opportunities that were obvious. He ran too patiently and was slow to hit the hole that was there at times would be my nitpicking of his game. He has great hands and a nice slashing running style that I do like. But vision is everything for RBs and I think the other two were a little ahead of him on that side of it.Young is a nice back to have in the stable. He's the hammer. He did, however, have the team's longest run this season (40 yards).
Sargent runs really hard with good vision and patience.
There's a reason the coaches started the season with IKM at No. 1. He's the best mix of power and speed. He just couldn't stay healthy.
It will be interesting to see how much playing time the new guys can squeeze out. You also have Henry Geil coming back.
With all of these options, one would hope the running game improves next year.
And that's a huge deal too. You get into a flow of games. Each game is different with how your opponents play etc. If your nicked up and not able to do that it is tough. My 2 cents is based on a pretty small sample size for sure. Compared to what the coaches see day in day out all year long. All 3 are capable of being an every down back in their own ways which is such a blessing and yet tough to try and manage/take advantage of. But it's a problem I'm sure the coaches would rather have than not.I would agree, to a degree. IKM was the least effective back this season.
I've seen too little of IKM to make a declaration one way or the other, though. He was showing something in practice that had him ahead of the other two against a pretty good D. When I saw him at the Chicago Opening, he was the best back there. He can run, inside and out, catch and block.
He just couldn't stay healthy this season or get into any rhythm. As KF said yesterday, it was hard for him to do that he does because he never was well enough to show it.
It sounds like Miller, Jacobs, Padilla, Britt, and McKinney will be enrolling early so you would think that gives them a leg up on the playbook.
Britt is rehabbing his ACL injury and Padilla won’t likely see the field next year.
I’m dreaming here, but what if Jestin could get on the field in a 4-2-5 pass rushing package? AJE, Nelson (hopefully), Chauncey, and Reiff on the Dline. Jacobs blitzing from the LB spot and then Colbert as the “cover” linebacker with Hankins, Brents, DJ Johnson, Hooker (hopefully), and Stone on the back end. That would be nice.
The nagging injury bug bit IKM this year. Who knows? It could easily bite another running back next year.
I think it could have a way of working but not so much the way they did it obviously because I agree I'm sure the coaches couldn't have been happy with the overall results. Publicly they'd put it on IKMs injuries most likely. But to me I like to see one main guy with the other two splitting up situational touches. By main guy I don't necessarily mean 25 touches for one RB with 10 or less to share with the other two. Closer to 15 would work but it takes about that to get in the flow of a game I think.I didn't like the three-back rotation before the season and I don't think it worked out very well. Granted Illinois and Nebraska's defenses were pathetic, but the best the running back looked was during those games when they leaned on Sargent and mixed in Young.
I'd also add that the running blocking left something to be desired as well. And part of that is teams still loading up the box because Iowa doesn't try to or can't stretch the field. It all leads to the inconsistencies we've seen on offense the first two years under BF.
...don't speak his name.Or more than one.
