Hawkeye Football Early Signing Period Superlatives

I'm on board with Castro as the sleeper. He looks like a natural at safety and I like the fact he also played QB in high school.

Sleeper - Huston
Contributor - both rb
Upside - Ezra
You think both of the new RBs will play this year? I don't honestly hope so. As fired up for having Goodson as I am I kinda hope we don't need him this year. We have 3 to be juniors all capable. Plus Geil who redshirted this year and Evans. Unless any of them get hurt/leave I wouldn't want to burn the newbies redshirts. I have confidence in the backs we have doing well. I want to see more Young and Sargent this year with less of IKM. But that's just me. I think Young is capable of being a bell cow kind of back. He should get no less then 15 touches a game. With the others being split however they want.

Young is a nice back to have in the stable. He's the hammer. He did, however, have the team's longest run this season (40 yards).

Sargent runs really hard with good vision and patience.

There's a reason the coaches started the season with IKM at No. 1. He's the best mix of power and speed. He just couldn't stay healthy.

It will be interesting to see how much playing time the new guys can squeeze out. You also have Henry Geil coming back.

With all of these options, one would hope the running game improves next year.

I thought IKM when he was in there missed some running lanes/cutback opportunities that were obvious. He ran too patiently and was slow to hit the hole that was there at times would be my nitpicking of his game. He has great hands and a nice slashing running style that I do like. But vision is everything for RBs and I think the other two were a little ahead of him on that side of it.

I would agree, to a degree. IKM was the least effective back this season.

I've seen too little of IKM to make a declaration one way or the other, though. He was showing something in practice that had him ahead of the other two against a pretty good D. When I saw him at the Chicago Opening, he was the best back there. He can run, inside and out, catch and block.

He just couldn't stay healthy this season or get into any rhythm. As KF said yesterday, it was hard for him to do that he does because he never was well enough to show it.

And that's a huge deal too. You get into a flow of games. Each game is different with how your opponents play etc. If your nicked up and not able to do that it is tough. My 2 cents is based on a pretty small sample size for sure. Compared to what the coaches see day in day out all year long. All 3 are capable of being an every down back in their own ways which is such a blessing and yet tough to try and manage/take advantage of. But it's a problem I'm sure the coaches would rather have than not.

I didn't like the three-back rotation before the season and I don't think it worked out very well. Granted Illinois and Nebraska's defenses were pathetic, but the best the running back looked was during those games when they leaned on Sargent and mixed in Young.

I'd also add that the running blocking left something to be desired as well. And part of that is teams still loading up the box because Iowa doesn't try to or can't stretch the field. It all leads to the inconsistencies we've seen on offense the first two years under BF.

It sounds like Miller, Jacobs, Padilla, Britt, and McKinney will be enrolling early so you would think that gives them a leg up on the playbook.

Britt is rehabbing his ACL injury and Padilla won’t likely see the field next year.

I’m dreaming here, but what if Jestin could get on the field in a 4-2-5 pass rushing package? AJE, Nelson (hopefully), Chauncey, and Reiff on the Dline. Jacobs blitzing from the LB spot and then Colbert as the “cover” linebacker with Hankins, Brents, DJ Johnson, Hooker (hopefully), and Stone on the back end. That would be nice.

Shadrick Byrd also is enrolling early, which gives him a chance to show himself in the spring when the coaches take it easy on the experienced backs.

Personally I’d like to see Goodson on the field next year. Our offense lacks playmakers. Maybe it’s a jet sweep series or throwing him the ball out of the backfield on screens. I’d like to see him get 5-10 offensive touches a game next year. Hopefully he can take on the punt return duties as well.

Obviously everyone wants Hutson to be the sleeper as we need help at that position. The guy I think could be the sleeper is McKinney. Late recruit with mostly MAC offers in the secondary and Phil Parker coaching him up. Sounds like he has pretty good athleticism with several return touchdowns. Playing time in the secondary is going to be tough to come by in the next few years though.

The defense is gonna be loaded even with Creamer/Turner leaving (and I wish they would stay as I find it hard to believe Moss has more upside than both but that's another thread). JJ is special. Why am I thinking of another JJ who is now playing in the NFL? Colbert feels like a hybrid. LB with safety speed. Exactly what Parker needs.

If our offense can just be slightly above avg in 2019 we gonna be winning the WEST.

I think it could have a way of working but not so much the way they did it obviously because I agree I'm sure the coaches couldn't have been happy with the overall results. Publicly they'd put it on IKMs injuries most likely. But to me I like to see one main guy with the other two splitting up situational touches. By main guy I don't necessarily mean 25 touches for one RB with 10 or less to share with the other two. Closer to 15 would work but it takes about that to get in the flow of a game I think.
I think players play better when their roles are more defined and regardless of what the depth chart said week in and week out I don't think going into any given game none of the RBs knew what to expect. I get going with the 'hot hand' at times but it's fair to say there's probably a better way to try doing what they want.

Rob, just now read your article on the incoming recruits and your thoughts. Good read. The Hunt kid looks like a beast. Very athletic as well. Give the ball to him on 4th and 1. And maybe punt as well. :D

And I too like the Castro kid. And is McKinney the kid who had all those returns for touchdowns on special teams? Only 4.6 speed but must have great vision and hip action like D. King. Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I'd like to see what IKM can do with a full healthy year. If he starts out next season and is unable to stay healthy I say plug in Goodson. I feel that Sargent should be the starter and go to guy, spelled by Young and situationally Goodson. Goodson will get good experience and the Sargent/Young 1-2 punch should be solid. I love Sargents ability in the passing game and remember that td catch Young had at Indiana where he was able to stay upright and dive into the endzone.
