Hawkeye Defense Motivated by Last Year’s Poor Performance at Iowa State

If #30 had not fallen down twice that would have eliminated two touchdowns. Was natural turf in Ames the problem?

I remember Iowa refused to leave the 4-3 last year and ISU got good matchups with wr on line backers.
D line should play good enough Iowa can sit in the Nickle a good chunk of the game

Nickel would be a tough call in this game. With a running back like David Johnson… you do not want to be down one line backer. That guy is a stud. He trucked Josey for crying out loud. So while I am not a huge fan of the base 4-3 putting linebackers on receivers… I’m not sure I’m a big fan of the alternative which is having an undersized defensive back trying to take on David Johnson.

Montgomery. Did you pick Johnson in your fantasy football draft? ;)

But yep, you’re dead on. Stop/contain the rushing game first.

This game scares me - we should have lost last year, and ISU really hurt a better defensive backfield last year.

Last year one of our safeties got caught 3 times giving up 2 long TD's and anothe rlong play that led to a short TD. He hopefully will not repeat that this year.

Iowa has at times run a 3-3-5 in lieu of a traditional 4-2-5 nickel package. Given that every lineman will need a double team, we will still have a numbers advantage because they'll need 6 guys to block our 3 linemen. David Johnson will be lucky to get 80 yards on this defense.

On the bright side they no longer have Lazard who always seemed to keep drives going with third down catches. We did lose Jackson, but it was our safety who was burnt more than once on big plays. With two different starting safeties this season hopefully we avoid that. We also didn't really have much tape on Montgomery or Butler, but we are fully aware this time what they're capable of doing.

All depends on who the lbs are. Few teams in college football puts as much responsibility on the LBs as Iowa has in the last 20 years. Part of the reason so many get a solid look at the NFL, even when they weren't heralded while at Iowa.

Iowa has a game under its belt. Three starters return.
ISU is still practicing against each other.

No brainer Iowa rolls.

Yes, thank God he's gone.

I rewatched last year's game again yesterday - seeing Josey get bulldozed for a td by Montgomery was incredible. Watching half an NFL defense give up 470÷ yards to their eventual backup qb (and transfer) and Montgomery was disheartening. We won, but ISU was the better team.

They beat our safeties and everyone not named Josh Jackson like they were standing still. They contained Wadley until the 4th quarter. And I think last year's team was more experienced than this year's.

If Stanley can't hook up with his guys downfield, and he hasn't really been able to hit guys in stride yet, we are going to have a long day Saturday.

Win maybe, but I don't see us "rolling". ISU has too explosive (or at least "aggressive") of an offense. Even with a strong rush I don't see us shutting them down, especially after the struggles our linebackers had last week.

Last week we basically wore NIU out. That's not gonna happen as the opponents improve. We'll need a more dynamic offensive attack.

I agree with most that our main focus should be on slowing their running game of Eric Bienemy
