Have we ever landed a 5 star recruit for basketball?

In my estimation, the three players in Iowa recruiting history that fit the "five star" billing the best are Connie Hawkins, Al Lorenzen, and Chris Kingsbury.

chris kingsbury:

  • High School Basketball Honors: All State, All District, All Conference, Ohio Division 1 Player of the Year, McDonald’s All-American, Nike All-American, Parade All-American, and USA Today All-American.

since 2002, per rivals, iowa has had 3 4* players - two on the current team, and that kid who transferred back to TN to be closer to his ailing father. Tyler Smith. All the rest - 3 star, a couple 2 star.

i can not imagine that al lorenzen was a 5 star player.

Al Lorenzen was Al McGuire's #1 player in that recruiting class on his TV show counting down the top recruits for that year. I remember watching it in my room in Hillcrest with some friends.

And Ricky Davis. Ricky Davis was a 5 star recruit.............
He's certainly more prolific, just by the length of time he played in the NBA, than anyone
mentioned, here.

Not bad, for an IOWA kid, from Davenport.

George Raveling signed a kid named Anthony Pendelton in his last recruiting class. He was out of Flint Michigan and supposedly the best shooter in high school and a first team AA. When Raveling left for USC he asked for his release and followed Raveling to LA. I believe he was a Prop 48 kid and never did much in college.

Thanks for all the information, needless to say, we haven't been in on many high 4 and 5 stars for quite awhile.

would be curious to see where Ravelings recruits were rated. IIRC, like 10-11 guys off that 1987 team that played professionally, 8 in the NBA. Marble was McDonalds AA.

Horton, Gamble, Armstrong, Marble, Jeff Moe, Brad Lohaus, Gerry Wright and Les Jepsen were all drafted in NBA. Bill Jones was undrafted but played 37 games for NJ. Kent Hill played overseas Professionally. That's 10 pros from the 86-87 team.

Certainly 5 star credentials coming out of HS even though he spent his freshman year at NE...........

» "Andre Woolridge: Guard out of Omaha Benson was rated as the No. 2 point guard nationally behind Jason Kidd, and No. 16 overall in the Bob Gibbons All-Star report. Woolridge’s other schools: Kentucky, Arizona, Syracuse, Georgetown, Arizona State. He played more than 10 years professionally in Europe."

.........from the Omaha World Herald

Al was a tremendous recruit. Back problems hampered him throughout his Iowa career. His senior year was ended by back surgery. Under today's rules he would have been eligible for a medical hardship year. Back then it was twenty percent. Today it is thirty percent.
