Hate to bring this up

no worries, mate. Lunardi has us as a solid lock for last team in the tourney.

Well, with Lunardi backing us we're in. Even if something happens and we are the 69th team, that will give us a 1 seed in the NIT and you might as well punch your ticket to the Garden because we would have to be the favorite to win it all. Winning it all would give us the momentum we need to finish 6th or so in the B10 next year which would be good for a 12 seed or so. I could live with that.

Has OK4P made a serious post in the non-politics portion of the board ever?

When was the last time Iowa was in the top 25? How about Alford led teams? We (well, really you morons (probably the same folks who want to fire Kurt)) made a mistake in shoving Alford out the door. The faster we (well, you guys) own up to, the faster we will recover as a program and fanbase.

Fran > Alford > Olson > Davis > Lick

i have a major man crush on Fran right now but would rank him among the best Iowa coaches for how fast he turned us around. Lets face it, we were one of the worst programs in the country and he got us tourney bound in 3 years. Alford did amazing things but he was handed a pristine program. Great coach though, just couldn't bring in the talent like Fran can.

Fran will bail like Lute and Alford did and be wildly successful at the next school. I would say order of those is Lute > Alford > Fran > Davis > Lick.

I always hate to see OK4P dilute his usual high standard of work that he has established with his football posts, by trying to replicate his schtick in the basketball forum. His trolling just doesn't work the same during basketball season. It's like watching Michael Jordan playing for the Wizards.

Saying that by all objective measures, Steve Alford is a better coach than Fran isn't trolling, though. The facts speak for themselves. I was Alford's last standing supporter on Miller's old board (before he banned me for no reason) and I still support the guy. He got a raw deal here. It's just like when O'Keefe left. Everyone was all like "super" and now they are close to slitting their wrists. Hawk fans have this uncanny knack of supporting making a change to a worse coach (save for when Davis got pushed out for Alford and when Lick got moved out for Fran).

Time will tell. SA can coach but the "silver spoon" arrogance rubbed too many the wrong way.

Fran has said all of the right things and more importantly seems to have teams that LOVE to play for him. I'll take him over Alford any day.

LOLerz.

I'll take McCaffery's personality and demeanor over Alford any day.

But both of them are very good basketball coaches:

McCaffery career record -291-217 in 17th year
Alford career record - 362-201 in 18th year (D-1 level only)

Both will be coaching for several more years.

I would love to see them meet in The Dance next March. Could happen folks!

Let's not forget Alford's 2 Big Ten Titles or the fact that he has spent much of his career in better conferences than Fran. Alford would have landed Woodbury as well and I would think that by the end of his career, Woodbury would have the potential to be as good as Erek Hansen.

If I ever have to hear him say "bigs" again referring to our front court I will poke my eyes out.

I would advise against that. First, you would still have to hear him say bigs because your ears would probably still work. Second, given the layout of this site, trying to post here regularly using vision impaired software would probably be impossible and you might blow an eardrum when you log on and that "CONGRATULATIONS" ad hijacks your speakers. It would really slow down your posting.

Me thinks you’re holding the memory of Alford in a romantic light. One they were two Big Ten Tourney championships not Big Ten championships. Here were Alfords placings in his Iowa career respectively: 7th, 6th, 8th, 8th, 4th, 7th, 2nd, 4th. 3 NCAA appearances and 3 NIT (one time in the NIT elite 8) other than that mostly 1st round knock outs. Add in attitude, personality, and player control issues, was Alford really that good for the state of Iowa? I am not arguing weather he is or was a good coach, but it was time for both parties to part ways.

It is really annoying that we keep talking about him, and I want to punch myself in the junk for getting lured in to spend time typing a response!

I think game time Fran is a better coach. I have seen better decision making that doesn’t make me scratch my head.

I agree with everything that was said. Both are good coaches with different styles. Fran is more emotional and Alfi was more laid back. But I'll take Fran. My take (albeit from a distance) is that Alfi didn't seem to care about what went on off court (ref: PP) as long you won. Fran has already shown to be more concerned with the all around person. There is no 'I' in this team.

GO HAWKS!!!

Fran won more ncaa games at siena than alford won at Iowa.

Fran will win more NCAA games at Iowa than Alford as well, it is just a matter of time.

The Alford era was frustrating, all the talent they had and nothing really to show for it...one NCAA tournament win.

If the athletic department gave Steve Alford a third of the support they're giving plan C here, he would have multiple sweet 16 runs.
