Has the game passed Kirk by?

You see more and more teams going with some type of spread offense with a dual threat QB. We had one once with Brad Banks and look how well that turned out.

Kirk's play-not-to-lose philosophy and refusual to change just doesn't cut it anymore in college football.

I dont think the game has passed him by, but the National Title chance has. Since the BCS has been implemented only two teams have won the title when their coach has been there longer than 4 years. And those were the first two BCS games played with Fulmer and Bowden. Iowa's only shot to ever have won the MNC was in 2002. The only coaches who will probably see the MNC again are Saban and Miles.

Wow! Although there seems to be a lot of problems exposed today. Let's not start calling for coaches heads. I also question the continued lack of "playing to WIN" at the end of the game. I realize Kirk likes to play the odds, but can we please factor into those odds how the defense has been playing throughout the game. We clearly could not count on them getting a stop, so why . . . Why not try to move the ball into field goal range? Dang, I hate losing to ISU even if we were outplayed.

I don't know if it's passed him by. It's just time for a change. I'm sick of this overly conservative coaching.

The offense has pretty much passed him by. Save for a couple of seasons, our offense simply isn't allowed to go out and win games. We let the defense do it, and hope the offense doesn't muck it up.

Conservatism as a general policy is hardly a bad thing, IMO. In fact I prefer it. But "general policy" means that it's not absolute law. There are situations that call for more aggressive tactics, and we just don't seem to recognize those situations. Even Bill Belichick goes for it on 4th down sometimes, and he's the guy that Ferentz learned an awful lot from.

I think our current defensive players do not fit the system that norm likes to play. Our defense was horrible today. Man on man works when you have a good d-line that can get pressure on the quarterback. We obviously do not have that this year at this point. Jantz had all day to throw and eventually when a wideout is matched up on a linebacker or castillo, they are going to get open. They go empty or trips and you take your best tackler (middle linebacker) and put him out on the receiver and we wonder why they have so much success running the ball and other spread teams do against us as well. I coach defense in a fairly successful high school program and there were blatant mistakes made today. Corners not looking for the ball, defensive ends not keeping contain, lack of change in game plan until late in the game in regards to pass rush and bringing blitzes. This is coaching, both before the game and making adjustments during the game. Iowa state ran quick tempo which tired us out and we are very out of shape, especially d-line. This team may get better, lets hope or we are not making a bowl game. Iowa state was better prepared, period. Their offense knew our weakness and they exploited it. They let us run the ball and that wasn't good enough for us so we pass or run reverses and other crap that is unnecessary.

This moronic thread is the exact reason I usually don't drop by boards after we lose. Seriously the number of Iowa fans that are totally clueless when it comes to anything relating to football is absolutely amazing to me. We are a very YOUNG team and there was a reason why most analysts were predicting a middle of the road year. A ton of programs would fire their coach tomorrow for a shot to have KF as their Head Coach, and that includes NFL teams as well.

the college game has , his coaching style would work in the pros
I was going to say this. His style would be better in the NFL, although the NFL would not tolerate playing for OT with 1:17 to go. The college game is different and he is falling behind.

Nothing has passed Kirk by at all. He has always been this way and we all love him for it when it works and hate him when it doesn't. What is going to be interesting is when KF needs to hire a new DC and a new OC if and when the time comes. I love both schemes but the vanilla play calling is old.

I think Kirk wants to win with the available talent he has. Now if he had two Marvin McNutt's maybe you could implement some type of rotating 2 QB offense.

Post of the day.

You want some evidence that in-game coaching is the problem?

Take a look at all the players we put in the NFL from last year's team. Then ask yourself how with that much talent, we went 7-5 in the 2010 regular season.

I do not want any of the coaches fired, I just want to see improvement on the mistakes we make over and over. KF admitted that the 2 minute drill against Wisconsin last year was bad so here was a chance to show improvement and we sat on the ball. Kirk said this off season we needed to be better in the 2 minute offense, KIRK SAID THAT. All I am asking is that we try, we two very good WRs give them a chance.

I agree. I'm not calling for anyone's head over one game, but I would like to see some common sense, more imagination, and learning from previous mistakes come into play at some point.

I actually have to agree with your troll attempt.

not trollin.
People don't want to hear it but just look at the scoreboards across this country.

This has been a gradual demise for quite some time, today stands out as did last bowl season. There will be more and they will happen more frequently until the B1G decides whether it wants to compete or stand on top of its pulpit screaming academics. They can't have both, that much has been proven now. So either do what's needed to compete or slowly but surely become more and more irrelevant.

I denied this for a couple of years, but it is glaringly obvious. Losing to Rice, ISU, NMSt, Ball St, struggling to beat Toledo, Fresno, getting pounded by a ND team that was beaten soundly by USF.

People don't want to hear it & they certainly don't want to believe it but its reality.

It doesn't make me less of a fan.
I just see what everyone outside of the midwest has seen for quite some time.
