Has Iowa lost its luster?

5 pt or less 7 pt or less
1999 0-2 0-4
2000 2-1 2-3
2001 0-2 2-4
2002 2-1 3-1
2003 1-0 2-0
2004 4-0 5-0
2005 0-2 0-3
2006 0-3 1-3
2007 2-2 3-2
2008 2-4 2-4
2009 4-1 4-2
2010 1-4 1-4

We were phenomenal in close games between 2002-04, but have been pretty horrid since then, for the most part.

2009 was a good year for close games, but also look at who the opponents were in most of those close wins:
UNI
Arkansas St.
A poor Michigan team

Should those 3 wins have even come down to the wire? IMO, we should have won those games comfortably, especially the UNI and Ark St. games.

Iowa's defense under Parker traditionally struggles against spread offenses - Michigan, Arkansas State and UNI had spread offenses in 2009. Potential Time Of Possession is also forfeited to the opponent's spread offense.

Edit: how many points will Iowa need to beat Missouri's passing spread offense in the Insight Bowl? I'm guessing a whole lot.

I dont think most people get it, Jon Miller gets it, Iowa has gone to 6 thats right 6 new years day bowl games in the last 10 years Please tell me when in The history of black and gold aka ,hawkeyes, has Iowa every done that not to mention that we have been in 9 bowl games out of the last 10 years I mean come on what part of that speaks that this coaching staff is not doing their jobs? Or is that not productive enough for you? This is Iowa its hard to get top notch recruits to come to this place, its not easy. What could KF and Co. get done at The U, or USC, or Texas, Florida, FSU, LSU? I would bet its hard to get them to Iowa vs playing in perfect weather and huge cities that have great night life. In IC a football player has a target on their backs. We should be thankful that we have what we have and give thanks that KF and Co. can do what they do with what they have in terms of talent.

Well being that you are siting Jon Miller, you must be right. Seriously know your history. Some of you give Kirk Ferentz way to much credit. Its as if you have him held on a pedestal. Is he a good coach? Yes, but he still takes a backseat to the man that made this program, Hayden Fry. Your referencing the 6 January bowl games is a little misleading. Here are some of Hayden Fry's records from his 3rd season to his 9th season.

3rd- 8 - 4
4th - 8 - 4
5th - 9 - 3
6th - 8 - 4
7th 10 - 2
8th 9 - 3
9th 10 - 3

Now if you used today's bowl system Hayden's Hawks would have went to 7 straight January bowl games. Remember Iowa went to the Outback Bowl with a 7 and 5 record a few years ago. So imo Hayden's 8 and 4 teams would've as well. I only bring this up because some imo have Kirk Ferentz and his tenure held way to high. Hayden established this program over 30 years ago. Its not little ole Iowa anymore. Iowa has a national Rep, due in large part because of Hayden. Furthermore, while yes, Iowa doesn't get as many of these "top" recruits, they get a fair share if them. Look at the Clayborns, Ballards, CJ Fiedorowicz, Tony Moeaki, Dace Richardson, Mike Jones, Matt Roth, Vernon Rollins, Ladell Betts, heck even Willie Guy and there are many more. Iowa gets good recruits. Heck some will say a player like Nico Law is a lower recruit but that's not accurate. He's a great get, just look at the teams Iowa beat out for him. Again, not saying Iowa gets as many as the Florida's of the world but they do get plenty.

Didn't we play only 3 non-con during most of Hayden's tenure? Adding that extra cupcake game a year helps Ferentz's record relative to Hayden's.

Exactly and that extra game would have more than likely been another W. So you can basically add another victory every year to Hayden's record.
