Has Ferentz ever let an assistant go?

erb is a good recruiter and our backs have been great since he was moved, inlcluding a doak winner.

he needed to be fired as WR coach.

Wow, that's quite a spread in competency. Great at recruiting and coaching running backs but termination-worth coaching wide receivers? Please explain.

I think he is saying he should have been fired AS the WR coach meaning he wasn't getting it done in that specific position.. which takes nothing away from the success he has had as RB coach and as a recruiter.

The "Making room" for a new assistant I believe was moving Erb over and hiring Soup...

erb wasnt doing anything with our receivers. they were a net negative at the time of the change.

since the change, both positions have got much better.

can you be more specific....not trying to flame, just curious

Has Kirk out and out fired anyone?? NO. But after his first year, there were some changes. I cant remember name of guy but he moved on or maybe moved back to NFL. Think he is still there. Never announced but always had feeling it was because Kirk felt he didnt fit in with staff or his expectations. Will try to research mroe to see if I can find guy's name

Long, Bielema, Elliott all moved on too. Rumors about Long's work ethic didnt please Kirk.

This.

You'd never know if KF fired someone as it isn't his style to do so publicly. He'll let the guy go and simply say he is moving on, ala Hampton - allows a guy to save face.

There also was a coach on the very first staff that was hired and only stayed for 1 year. I believe he moved onto the 'Skins. He was an east-coast guy, so who knows if he didn't like iowa, didn't like college recruiting, or didn't fit.

Went back and looked it up. Coach's name was Pat Flaherty. He is still coaching in NFL wiht NY Giants. If he can work for Tom Coughlin, he should be able to work for anyone.

Not sure what happened at Iowa but, as stated, he moved on after one year. Could be he wasnt happy, could be Kirk wasnt happy but it was simply announced that he was leaving for NFL and Redskins.

I was thinking Joe Philbin Who is now the O coordinator at Greenbay.I was certain he spent 2 yrs at IA good call on Flaherty.

Joe Philbin made it clear that he went to Green Bay because he didnt like the recruiting and the time away from his family. NFL requires long hours too but at least he can go home late at night rather than sleeping on hotel room.

yes, flaherty is who i was referring to.

use your breadth and depth of coaching knowledge to compare/contrast with the te coaching position and evaluate which to be the more useless........

TE position is actually tough and could require fair amount of coaching responsibility. You have to be able to block like a lineman (understand run game as well as plethora of pass pro schemes), you have to have understanding of pass game and coverage recognition.

Yes, you could have the oline coach responsible for the blocking and the receivers coach responsible for pass game, but as many personnel groupings as there can be you could have the oline coach responsible for up to 9 guys on the same play.

Running back coach has traditionally been a place to put a minority coach who can recruit his a$$ off. Carl Jackson ring a bell?
