Has Drew Brees Played His Last NFL Game?

Questioned the word, actions, thoughts, ideas, of a black man regarding social justice.

no he didn't. he answered the question of what he thought of when he heard the national anthem. he said he thought of his two grandfathers who both fought in WWII and that we should always treat each other with respect and as we would have them treat ourselves. that's a paraphrase. after his teammates didn't like what he said or how he said it, whichever it was, he apologized for not being sensitive enough. but, that goes back to my point about respect of someone else's opinion being a two-way street. you respect my position, belief, and i respect yours. as soon as it becomes a one-way street, then the goal is not for dialogue, discussion and reform...real reform, it is of winning an argument, driving an agenda or narrative. it's that simple. the topic could be which alternate iowa hawkeye uniform do you like better. if one side doesn't allow you to give your opinion and then discuss it, and you have to abide by their opinion, then what do you have?

You are arguing for the side that is going to lose this and is wrong.

if one side doesn't allow you to give your opinion and then discuss it, and you have to abide by their opinion, then what do you have?

You have a coach that tells a young man standing up against racist comments that he needs apologize to the maker of the racist comment. Thats what you have.

This year is beginning to get compared to 1968, and there was even a pandemic that year as well. The Hong Kong flu simply got overshadowed by the assassinations, political and social upheaval, all the rest.

I was a toddler that year so have only read and heard about it from history sources. The difference is technology and social media has made the whole world smaller and made access to information quicker than in 1968.

You are correct about latest tech systems making news just fly around the globe.

I, like a few others on here, remember 1968 as I was 16 turning 17. It was a shit year. A very contentious political year, King and RFK getting killed, the war was really getting bad. Ironically Nixon was the law and order candidate, haha.

But Brees showed insensitivity to this situation by suggesting what other players shouldn't do. If Brees would have just said he would not take a knee during the anthem but that is only his stance and we have a free country and freedoms to protect he would have been ok I think.

Unlike way to many people who wont apologize and get the issue behind them he has apologized twice. I havent read all of his apologies but that is a good start to having players and some fans work with him.

I can agree with that. The flag means different things to different people. I was raised to respect it, and I do.

But other more unfortunate people may have different viewpoints of the flag. If they want to burn it, or wipe their ass with it, they are no more right or wrong than I because freedom of speech gives them that right.

Wildest prediction you will hear all year. Collin Kapernich will be NFL commissioner some day.

Brees didn't suggest what other players shouldn't do. All he said was he will never agree with it. There is a pretty big distinction between the two. Big enough where I think one is completely wrong and the other was completely fine.

If you are a sports or Hollywood celebrity, and you tweet something that others don't like, and Lebron James is the ring leader, they will attack you and call you a racist for the most part. There was nothing wrong with what Drew said the first time. He was bullied into apologizing. Freedom of speech is under serious attack in America by very angry and radical people.

I share your concern about freedom of speed and coercion of thought; but I doubt that is what happened with Brees. I am guessing he actually heard how his statement made his teammates feel, and he adjusted his stance because of that. Had he not gone that route things would have gotten ugly for him, but his comments since have certainly seemed sincere.

It is okay to listen and change one's mind, that is not a weakness. But as you recognize and fear, if someone is coerced into believing (or saying without believing) something, that will create resentment and divide.

What a difficult line this is for all of us to walk, being open to learning and changing, but being vigilant that ALL are still allowed their freedom of thought and expression. Right now, I am really trying to listen and learn.

Are you sure Brees just didn't cave? I get he has gone to various social media outlets to apologize, but I have no clue if he was truly enlightened or was badgered into an apology. I guess time will give me my answer.

We view things very similarly. And while I want to be part of the solution, I'm guessing you want to be part of it too, there never will be a solution because of the bolded.

Racism isn't a one-way street ( I know I said it earlier but I was being sarcastic) but it will always be treated like one and thats precisely why it will never go away and probably get worse.

No, I don't know. I just hope that it was a sincere dialogue, that is what we all need more of.

You're right, when people are out protesting peacefully and being gassed, clubbed, shot and tazed by police it's a definite 1st amendment violation. Attacking people on twitter for saying ignorant things however is not a violation, what government entity is going after Drew Brees on this? Did I miss something?

We now have a most unforgiving culture. Say or tweet something deemed offensive and the mob will call for you to be fired or boycotted. Things like watching the riots and tweeting that "all lives matter" that got the Sacramento Kings announcer fired. Or saying you support social justice but don't think it's right to kneel for the flag has a twitter mob go after you. Or an editor in Philadelphia wrote an op-ed about the looting and burning of business being bad that he titled "Buildings Matter Too," who was fired. Or off-color things you may have said years ago. Or something on your social media platform you posted when you were 16.

It would be OK to call people out on some of the things mentioned above, but to seek to ruin that person because he committed one of these offenses? It's rough out there, and unforgiving.

Or the editor of the NYT editorial page who "resigned" after he had the audacity to run an opinion that ran counter to The Narrative last week.
