Remember those mid 80's teams like it was yesterday. Favorite 80's Hawkeye? "Mr Postman" Robert Smith. In that 59-0 game he spun Illinois's cocky loudmouth defensive backs like they were in a clothes dryer.
First off. My spouse has a good friedf that lives in Ackley. I've been there for sauerkraut days. As for Smith, I believe, and I could be totally wrong, that football took a back seat to Track & Field in high school. He did both at Iowa but his freshman year he couldn't catch a cold. Once he learned to run under control and keep his eyes from bouncing all over the place he terrorized big ten secondaries. If you watch the live stream of the HS girls basketball game at the state tournament right now (Exira vs. AGWSR), you'll see Robert Smith as the referee. I know, CSB. Just found it ironic that I came here at halftime of the game and the first post I read was about him. Robert worked a game with Norm Granger in a game I attended a couple of weeks ago. Both look like they can play...at a bit higher weight.
Props Estron for the heads up!89 years young today..........
impressive for a male to live that long.Props Estron for the heads up!
Coach Fry is a one-of-a-kind man.
And as an aside:
I hate what Time does to us all.
Ahhh yes! I was at that game and it was a thing of beauty! I believe they set the Hawkeye record for scoring in the first quarter of that game. Will never forget what Hayden Fry did for the Hawks and the fans! Happy Birthday Hayden!Remember those mid 80's teams like it was yesterday. Favorite 80's Hawkeye? "Mr Postman" Robert Smith. My sophomore year. Iowa had just been knocked off it's number one perch by Ohio State and had a bone to chew with someone. And those Mike White Illinois teams flapped their gums more than any team in the big ten, particularly their defensive backs. Long and Smith burned them over the top twice in the first seven minutes. On his third catch he suffered a high ankle sprain. All the years I thought he had got roughed up but a recent you tube viewing showed he just got his cleats caught in the turf. Earlier that year in the memorable MSU win he scored the first TD of the game on an up route, getting behind a DB by the name of Phil Parker.Ahhh yes! I was at that game and it was a thing of beauty!
