Had a Debate with Nebraska Fan About National Championships

Prior to the playoff era, evaluating how many national championships a team can claim is EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE.

Nebraska claims 5 MYTHICAL championships. They pretty much hang their hat on the final AP poll, but for most of the AP poll era, the final AP poll was taken BEFORE the bowl games.

Iowa can easily claim 4:

1921
1956
1958
1960

In all of those years, at least one major polling service put Iowa at #1 at the end of the year. In several of those years, more than one service rated the Hawkeyes #1.

What say you???

SB Nation does a definitive, comprehensive study on this topic (google college football national championships year by year). They credit Iowa with THREE national championships:

1921
1958
1960

I think Iowa absolutely claims 3 at a minimum.

Telling people about championships you might be able to claim from 12 presidents ago makes you the exact fan that we make fun of all the nebraska half-breeds for being.

You're debating someone about a championship that you supposedly say happened before Prince Phillip was born (have you seen that walking corpse lately?).

Don't be that guy.

Like everyone here I'd love to see us win one before I die. To me, however, how many mythical titles a program has is irrelevant. The only thing that matters to me is present day and the future. Iowa has never won a NC in my life time, but in the same breath, if memory is correct, Nebby hasn't won one since 97. So I'm sorry but IMO, NC's are awesome, but only relevant if incoming recruits were alive at that time.

The past is the past focus on the present and the future. As a college football fan, I can see how Nebby fans struggle with this.

I would throw out 1960. Iowa lost to Minnesota, which finished #1.

1921 and 1958 are legit I would say. Iowa can claim 2 National championship"s.

Agreed. All championships pre-BCS and all contested BCS championships (like the year Auburn finished 13-0 but got left out) don't count. Take 1997 or whatever year it was where Nebraska and Michigan were "co-champions." No. Michigan would have absolutely murdered Nebraska. Nebraska played a bunch of turds who couldn't handle the option. Unless we had a fairly reasonably undisputed 1-2 matchup or the 4 team playoff, it is just fiction.

Not sure about 1960, as Iowa lost to Minnesota that year, before the end of the season. I'm sure Minnesota was ranked ahead of Iowa after that game, and I don't think Minnesota lost that year. What reference is there that puts Iowa ahead of the Gophers at the end of the season (even before the Rose Bowl)? But, if we're going to brag about Iowa's NCs, the last being in the late 50s, I'm going to start smoking a pack of Camel no filters a day, drink 3 martinis at lunch, listen to Sinatra and drive my 3 mile a gallon Caddy to the stadium, just to match those Husker fans who still sport the mullet, wear parachute pants and have memorized the lines to a Coolio song.

Should also claim 1900 and 1922. Not sure you can count Playboy preseason champions, though (Hawks were picked in 1961, maybe 1964, I believe).

It's just coffee talk. Lighten up a little bit. It was a friendly discussion.

the whole point is that their mythical national championships are no more impressive than ours. They are ALL irrelevant.

I'll go out on a limb and say that neither Nebraska nor Iowa will ever win another

I'll continue to be that guy until Nebraska or Iowa win another one. It is going to be a LONG wait, although I must point out that the Chicago Cubs went 108 years between championships. If they can do it. can Iowa do it??

I'll go out on a limb and say we continue to hear all about the NC's Nebby won in the 90's.

Their 1994 "championship" is also tainted. There was a monster Penn State team that also finished undefeated that year.

I would love to see Iowa win a National Championship. Duh. However, I am not going to base my support for the Hawks on that goal. I want, badly, to win the West as often as we can. Playing for a BT championship every so often would be great. Winning one would be outstanding. I love it when we win a bowl game. I hate ISU, Mn, Wi, PSU, OSU and mich. Do not like any BT team very much. Our D is great; I really want a better run game; I want teams to have to respect our passing game. My season ticks at Kinnick are a highlight of my retirement years, as are all of the Hawks away games. At my advanced age, that is enough for me and strikes me as a reasonable challenge.

Nebraska half-breeds probably have deluded themselves into believing that Tom Osborne was one of those twelve presidents..

I have explained this to a woman who doesn't know anything about football, yet she understood it. I have tried many times to explain this to Nebraska fans, both male and female and I may as well be speaking Chinese.

I agree with the throw out 1960 unless Minny had a loss that year. That game was supposed to be for the Natty Champ.

There you go again telling people how not to act on a very simple, non-threatening subject. As the OP said it is just an exercise.
