Guards have to be better than 2 for 17

I thought Gessel played well and Clemmons was Ok also, but to go very far (and I think this team could be a sweet 16 team) we just have to find some guards to hit shots. Maybe its time for Olgesby to get hot or maybe Jok who has really been out of control the last couple of games. Our front court is sure playing well enough to make a run

I disagree here is their stat line from today.. You give me 7 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and ONLY 2 turnovers. SIGN ME UP for that, Right now this second...

Other than Uthoff and White, Iowa shot 2 for 13 (15%) from 3 point range. That's most concerning to me. Oglesby 1 for 5? Jok 0 for 2? Those are your shooting guards....

I'd sign up for it if I thought the front line would produce like they did today. If White or Uthoff have an off game somebody needs to make up for it.

Ogelsby got more playing time than usual because it was Senior day and he kept shooting because crowd wanted to see him hit one, which he did eventually. Normally, Jok would have got more minutes in which case I bet he would have got it going. 0-2 isn't a terrible day; he just didn't play much.

The guards have shown plenty of times that they can do better than that. Over all they are probably a slightly below average group. But to take one game's stats and say they have to do better doesn't make much sense.

The shooting wasn't very good. But they did everything else pretty well.

Jok going 0/5 is not helping things.

While I would like to see better shooting from the guards, not worry too much after a 17 point win.

Would be great to see Jok start fast and Oges to hit early next game. if White can keep bringing it like he is, and a few other guys have a good game....watch out.

Cuz the crowd wanted him to hit one? No cuz they were open looks is why he was shooting.

The beauty of White hitting 3s, Clemmons emerging, Ogelsby hitting in some recent games and Mike's mid range game...

We are actually at a point that we can afford a couple guys having an off shooting night.

The front line is typically producing and has been the most reliable, if our front line doesn't produce Iowa more often than not Iowa isn't overcoming it. Iowa goes with how White and or Uthoff perform in each and every game. If either have an off games Iowa Iowa typically doesn't fair well.

White didn't score double digits this season in 5 games. Iowa was 0-5 in those games. Losses: UNI - Wisconsin - Purdue - Northwestern - MSU

Uthoff didn't score double digits in 10 games. Iowa was 5-5 in those games. Losses: Texas- ISU - UNI - Purdue - Wisconsin.

Pretty safe to say Doc that Iowa will go as far as theses 2 can take us. Clemmons and Gessell average a combined 11 ppg so them scoring just 4 below its average isn't going to hurt Iowa. They need to do exactly what they did today, assists and protect the ball which they did extremely well today with only 2 turnovers.

Jok has been a little off so hope he can find his shot. The way he was rushing early in the Indy game makes me think he is pressing himself and hope Fran can settle him down. Clemmons and Gesell are taking care of the ball, Mikey had 9 assists yesterday awesome, and Gesell's shootiing is off from 3 pt range which is why he is not taking many but his mid range jumper is fine.

Jok and Oges need to be a bit better from the wing 2 spot is all.

Sure...would we like Jok and Ogs to be better than 1-7 from three...yes. Have they been better than that over the past 6-7 games...yes.

When you are working against a 2-3 zone that tries to match up against your shooters at the three point line, Iowa did exactly what you need to do yesterday...bring the zone out and lob over for dunks. You have to give up one or the other the way NW plays it. Iowa then forced NW to cheat back in the zone, and that left Uthoff wide open for 3s in the second half...with the spacing and player position NW couldn't guard against both. Absolutely great coaching...and patience.

The next step to beat that zone is penetration and dishing to the open man...sucking guys to the ball and lobs or hitting the guys at the 3 point line for jumpers. Gesell and Clemmons were very, very good yesterday.

I agree with what you say but I think the guards need to make a third of their shots because it opens things up in the paint for White and Woody. Uthoff is going to get points anywhere he wants. The game yesterday negates my points completely. I'm just thinking it would make us more dangerous.

jNW is a scrappy team, and a tough team to play. Yet they are by no means a NCAA team at all. Our guards need to protect and dish the ball like they did against jNW, but they will need to also hit some shots and score some or we will be bounced early in the tourney

I can't wait to play someone not in the Big 10. Our length will be a huge problem for most anyone we play. Woodbury and Jok were outstanding last year in the NCAA Tournament game. It's not possible to prepare for Uthoff's shot blocking on the perimeter or White and Gabe's fast break speed by watching film.

Yep. As always in a tournament run, the guards are key. White & Uthoff will be a mismatch & give teams headaches on the wings. If Iowa can get outstanding guard play to compliment them, the sky is the limits. White hitting 3's now is really helping Gessel & Clemmons now. That may have been the key for this nice run.
