Growing up a Hawk

I grew up in a time when the Hawks were not very good, but I became a Hawk fan forever. If I would of had the chance I would have played for the Hawks no matter how bad they were or who the coach was. I get sick of these kids saying they grew up Hawk fans then going elsewhere. If they were true Hawk fans they would want to help rebuild the program. It is there right to go anywhere they want. I do not hate these kids for going elsewhere, but I will not root for them. My friend says they are Iowans and I should root for the. They are not Iowans anymore.

If they feel they have a better opportunity elsewhere, you can't blame them for leaving. They are 18 year old kids, don't take it personally

If you are talking about Uthoff, he didn't grow up a Hawk fan.

And I don't blame guys like Barnes or Uthoff for not coming here - it's not their job to save the program.

These kids have to look out for their best interests. Your "fandom" of the Hawks does little to affect your life; however, where these kids elect to attend college and play basketball has a serious effect on their life. Even if they grew up Hawk fans I wouldn't expect they would blindly attend Iowa if they believed another university would better help them in basketball and life. They only get one chance to play college basketball and go to college. My "fandom" would be pretty low on my deciding factors.

It really isn't any different from a non-athlete electing his college. Many kids are passionate hawk fans and love the University and the state of Iowa but for decide there are better options for them personally than Iowa. Really, the only difference is nobody cares about those kids personal decisions. In fact most people don't really care personally about any of these athletes themselves, why should they care about you and your rooting interests.

I don't blame kids for leaving at all, no matter if they play BB or FB. If they meet a great coach that they connect with or really enjoy another campus, so be it. They have to do what is best for them.

All this would mean something if your name was Harrison Barnes, Uhtoff, Lafrentz but what you or I would do doesn't mean ****.
A true human being understands it ok for people to make their own choices and doesn't hold it against them.
Grow up and quit acting like a spoiled brat. Its just really not that important or shouldn't be at least.

Grow up. I don't know how anyone can bash someone for taking advantage of the opportunity to play in a quality program that's in the NCAAs almost every year, to learn from a well respected coach and get a good education. This applies for Barnes, Uthoff or whoever else leaves Iowa to go to another school. These kids aren't required to play for Iowa just because they were born here, and I'm sure they are probably glad idiots like you won't be rooting for them.

Why should we root for these kids once they go to school somewhere else? I don't hate them or anything, but as a Hawk fan I don't owe them my support either. Once they commit to another school they become our competitor. I don't wish them any more or less good fortune than I do any other Badger, Illini or Gopher.

My dad's dad is an Iowa alum. (Lawyer)
My dad is an Iowa alum. (Pharmacist)
My dad's sister is an Iowa alum. (Masters in teaching/administration)
My mother is an Iowa alum. (Music)
My brother is an Iowa alum. (General studies)
I am an Iowa alum. (Pharmacist)

When my sister wanted to follow her life-long dream and passion to become a teacher, she chose the best route for her....ISU.

We didn't begrudge her for a second. It was the right fit for her desire and needed job skills. Good on her.

I hear what your saying westview. It would have been a dream come true to play for the hawkeyes.

I am disappointed when a good prospect leaves Iowa. After they leave I don't really follow their careers.

When it is all said and done a better program will keep these kids around and until then I am happy with the people that want to be here and want to be part of turning the program around.

re-read the OP's post ... seems confrontational at first blush, but re-read and not so much ... I agree with the OP mostly but would offer that even if the kid did want to help rebuild the program, there are other "wants" that may be higher priorities, like a particular major, etc.

I grew up a Hawk, and as much as I'd love it if my kids are good enough to play for the Hawks some day, if Northwestern or Stanford are offering them a schollie, I'll be making sure they make that visit

Have no problem with a kid going where he wants, but he sure doesn't deserve the support of anyone who isn't related to him or isn't a fan of the program he chooses. I already forgot Uthoff's first name. Never met him.....wouldn't go out of my way to.

Anybody know how Basbee's team did last night?

I don't think anyone is saying you should hate the guys who leave. You just aren't obligated to root for them. I'll root for them, personally. But considering them less of an Iowan because they left isn't really all that different than considering someone less of a human being because they are black/Jewish/Muslim/etc. I realize that is a much more serious scenario in practice, but it's the same in principle.

I could care less where a kid was born. If he isn't a Hawk, he means nothing to me. Nothing to hate, nothing to support, nothing.

Everyone has to make what they feel is the best decision for them. It doesn't matter what others think or if it goes against the grain of what is popular. It's about being true to yourself.
