Grinnell College on ESPN 3 right now

Playing against Illinois College right now. They aren't playing the greatest but this is something to see.

Who cares? Gregg doyel wrote a great article on cbs sports completely exposing that fraud of a coach. They are an embarrassment to good sportsmanship, team play, and basketball and sports as a whole. Figures espn (a company that has ruined sports) televises that joke.

Because it is a good article with facts that expose grinell for the joke they are. Read it and tell me otherwise.

I read the article. Not sure where the "facts" you referred to are. The coach writes books and has to book creampuffs because no one will play him. Lots of conjecture and opinion - but nothing to make make me think ill of the Grinnell program.

Color me unimpressed, Jonny and Gregg.

Really... another person dissing on Grinnell? Dude get a life, its working for them. In fact I'd say the teams doing exactly what the coach wanted, they are the talk of Div III again this year, on an ESPN network, and probably getting recruits to notice.

I don't get it. Any press is good press, when it comes to basketball in Iowa.

I should have known you were off your rocker after you said Gregg Doyel wrote a great article.

trolling aside, when you're playing at that level, "gimmick" offenses are very successful. much like how June Jones was able to succeed at Hawaii only throwing the ball or Navy running the triple option. it doesn't work at the highest level, because coaches are smarter and athletes are better, but at those levels you can win with anything if you do it really well. and if you get some publicity from it, all the better. Doyel gets paid to be butthurt and angry.

Where is the evidence for this? I think it would be really interesting to see a major college program run this system. For a good read, read the book, Coaching the System: A complete guide to basketball's most explosive style of play. They argue this very point in the book.

Gregg Doyel is the joke as is your post.

no hard evidence, but there are examples.

D'Antoni is the best example. it can win, but when it comes down to the best competition, eventually the weaknesses of the system are the undoing. same goes for Oregon. they fold up and die when they play a tough, physical teams like Stanford and Ohio St. Georgia Tech dominated everyone for a whole year till Iowa punched them in the mouth in the Orange Bowl.

in the end, it's just a battle of opinions. but i believe if you want to be a great program at the highest level, you have to at least have a little balance on your team. can't be all finesse, can't be all brute strength. can't be all run, can't be all pass. need to be able to do multiple things well in case weather or opponent present challenges to what you do well.

Anyone with any real basketball sense has zero respect for grinnell and how they go about their business. They bring in a completely over matched opponent (on purpose), and then they bastardize the game of basketball for publicity, and most morons (present company excluded of course) fall for it.

What they do is identify one selfish SOB to take every shot in the game. This player never crosses half court and doesn't even pretend to play defense. Actually the whole team does not defend during this game because ALL they care about it getting this one player points. Because if this one player scores 103 points ESPN will cover it without investigating HOW it occurred. It is not a story because it ain't special. The story should be how unsportsmanlike and selfish this entire act is. Anyone who ever played or coached competitive sports should find this appalling, but because Greg doyel wrote some articles the tavern hoks hated, they dismiss this column. The facts are stated here. Grinnell is a joke and the real rubes are the ones who actually buy this snake oil salesman's book.

This is such a dumb post.

Do you also find it selfish and unsportsmanlike that olinemen don't get to carry the ball? It's not fair the rbs get to have all the fun.

I highly doubt any of the Grinnell players are complaining about all the publicity they are getting. I bet seeing ESPN there covering their games is a real treat.

THis right here shows that you know ZERO about basketball...keep posting your clueless garbage and showing everybody how silly you are.

Um......They actually do play defense....one of the big fallacies of people who do not understand the system. They have like 5 different press defenses and several half court trapping defenses. But, they do have a 2 for 1 approach (willing to give up a lay-up in exchange for getting a 3 pointer on the other end). However, it is not like they are not applying any pressure to the person shooting the lay-up, they do try to contest it, but they want the ball back on offense in less than 12 seconds. It is all about points per possession and getting a certain amount of shot attempts, steals, and making half of your shots from 3s.

But, they do play defense. Yes, they may play some "Goon Ball" (3 or 4 players play defense while 1 or 2 hang back for a fast break or shot out-let), but that is a part of their strategy.

I would love to see a major program play this exact style.
