Greg Mabin moving to defense

Of course, it would be kinda nice to have a CB with some sure hands....or, he's moving to CB because of the lack thereof. Sounds intreaguing, nonetheless.

Interesting move, as Iowa clearly needs WRs to emerge as play makers; must not think Mabin will push for time. Would have thought FS might be a better fit than CB for Mabin but time will tell. He's listed at 6'2 which means he's probably just under 6'1 and weighs around 190. Iowa is also in pretty good shape at CB from the outside looking in:

Lowery is seasoned, Draper & Buford got their feet wet in '12.

Lomax is coming off shoulder surgery and should push for a starting role or at least fit as a nickel CB. Had he been healthy he would likely have been the nickel CB in '12.
Campbell is a great athlete but may be best served as a reserve & ST guy
Flemming is another great athlete but has yet to find a home
G. Smith is undersized but didn't look like he'd be a liability in the slot to me; don't think he'd hold up in man on the outside though.

Would guess Lowery and Draper or Lomax are the starting two CBs. Buford probably is your 4th CB, but beyond him it is a bit of a mystery. Maybe Mabin can make an impact on ST early and grow into a bigger role at CB.

Hope tht this doesn't signal another Florida recruiting failure. The guy wasn't really recruited by harldy anyone else. Man this team sure has talent issues....

Better players beating out another player like Mabin doesn't signify a "recruiting failure." Like every other D1 team in the country (who isn't on probation) we have 85 scholarship players to fit into 22 starting positions. Not everyone is going to find the depth chart. This is not an enigma known only to Iowa Football.

Also, with Mabin moving to defense, it does not follow that "this team sure has talent issues." Did you conclude that the team had talent issues when Christian Ballard moved from TE to DL?

No I didn't. I seem to recall that Ballard was rather highly touted coming out of High School and that there was speculation that he would move to defense. My conclusion on the teams talent is based on watching them last year. Empirical evidence if you will.
Our recruiting struggles in Florida are well documented. I just stated that I hope Mabin isn't another one of them as he was recuited by Iowa (and Tulane?) as a wide receiver and has already been moved.

Dude just wait until you see how it plays out before jumping to conclusions. You ever think that maybe the coaches have a better grasp on the situation than any of us? Some people just live in the dumps around here.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions. I'm not questioning the coaches (other than perhaps the Florida recruiting results which again, are well documented). I'm just stating that I HOPE he (Mabin) is not another in a long line of Florida recruiting disappointments. I'm not saying that Ferentz sucks and the coaches shouldn't have moved him etc.
