Greg Garman visit

Nice!

It is down to Pitt/Iowa/Illinois/UM at this point it appears.

If program stability is a major factor in his decision, I like our odds. UM only has 4 schollies left, and my understanding is that Garmon probably would have committed to UM by now if he wanted to go there - as another commit could likely steal his schollie by committing before him.

I've also read that he has wanted to get out of state to play ball....so that appears to be working in our favor as well.

I think it is down to Iowa/Illinois for him....my hope is that he would much rather play for KF than Ron Zook...I mean, who would want it the other way around?

Zook is a couple more 5-7 seasons away from losing his job.

Why would you want to play under Ron Zook? I can understand playing at OSU, even with Tressel's departure(although while still facing the possibility of stiff penalties that's a harder sell)because OSU has a lot going for it but, Zook at Illinois? Whaaa? He may be gone in less than a season and then you have some random new coach coming in...then what? You get to "enjoy" the many advantages of Champaign, Illinois?

BTW-It's likely UM pushes the conference limit of 28 this class.

I like the fact that he is listed as ATH/RB with 4.4 speed. We could use him at RB, WR, LB, DB, Safety. Where ever we have a need or where he wants.

Most of the UM recruiting junkies I've spoken with have told me 26 is the likely number, which would mean there are only 4 rides left to give (6 if they go to the conference maximum - which I don't find to be too incredibly likely).

They have a lot more than 6 offers out right now....I'm simply saying that if Garmon had UM very high on his list, you'd think he would have committed there to secure a ship. The fact that he hasn't bodes well for Iowa....that's all I'm saying.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Iowa couldn't go head to head with UM for this kid if it came down to it...I'm simply saying that UM is rebuilding right now (regardless of how many times Brady Hoke says "We're Michigan"), and KF has a proven commodity here in IC....that can definitely be appealing to a knowledgeable recruit.

Getting a back with breakaway speed (Jordan C. is elusive but not is something that I've hoped for awhile. Tevin Coleman, I've read had his visit changed to tomorrow. Hopefully, whether it be Garmon, Coleman, David Smith or a player to be named later. We'll get one speedster that'll stay at TB to complement our power backs.

I would think Iowa would be high on the list due to the school's pedigree of sending kids to Iowa... a.k.a. Sanders. :)

Wrong school.

Sanders went to Cathedral Prep, as did Hinkel.

This kid goes to Bishop McDowell.

Don't think we've ever gotten a player from there.

Jovon Johnson went to Mercyhurst Prep.

Oops... Should have done my research.

A four star speed back from out of state who's being pursued by a traditional power? We get them all-the-time. Wait, waaait....

Going by Rivals' stars:
Kalvin Bailey and Brandon Wegher were 4-stars that picked Iowa over "traditional powers." Albert Young and Marcus Coker were 4-stars but didn't have a "traditional power" on their offer sheet. But yes, no 4-star speed backs from out of state with offers from "traditional powers" have committed to Iowa in the past ten years.

First time for everything....hopefully

Weren't Bailey and Wegher being recruited by traditional powers at other positions than primarily tailback? I believe Bailey was being primarily recruited as a fullback by the "powers", whereas Wegher was seen as a slot/all-purpose back. My point, though, wasn't that Iowa doesn't usually pick up backs that are highly regarded and have "traditional" offers with rare exceptions, and given the amount of offers versus commitments in that area...I'd say that's held true. I'm not saying we don't have a realistic shot at Garmon. Because, happily, I think we do, I'm just not seeing a lot of backs with his offer sheet and resume who've committed to Iowa. That's why it's all the more important/significant to land him. BTW-having watched T. Coleman's highlights I'm not convinced that he isn't Garmon's equal or at least close to it.

Agreed. Despite being a homer, I can't see why anybody in their right mind would rather play for the Zooker over Ferentz. I mean why play in January bowl games under KF when you can play on 5-win teams with Zook?

247 has an article on him about his visit and he said "It blew him away". That's the headline. Looks good!

Very good sign, also mentioned Iowa will be one of the 3 hats sitting on the table when he announces on Jan 2.

'12 PA RB Greg Garmon will not visit #NotreDame today as planned. HS coach had to return to Erie for personal reasons. #Irish
