Greg Davis calling the reverse pitch with DMX

Yeah I've heard Ed Podolak describe the fake FG against ISU several times. He never mentioned anything about Iowa having trouble executing the fake.

It's funny. Most Hawk fans have been upset for YEARS that Iowa isn't aggressive enough on offense. Now the Hawks are taking more risks, but when things don't work out (because sometimes that happens), some of you are critical of the decisions.

It's pathetic, really.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I get it. You think you can intimidate people by putting "intimidator" in your handle. Well I'm gonna hack into your computer and steal your identity . . . (jeopardy music) . . . EUREKA!!! I knew it! Your real name is Princess Cryzalot.

wrong place on the field, wrong time for a guy who hasn't touched the ball this season.

The only good thing, was that is was against a weak opponent.

What concerns me more, is the number of quick out lateral passes CJ threw. I hope we're not slipping back to old habits, that thing is a loser more often than not...especially against the tougher defenses ahead.

If you're referring to the hot route screens, those are perfectly fine by me. If a defense is giving you that, there's no problem with taking it. It was a loser more often than not with Rudock because his pass took longer to get out there than CJ's do. CJ gets it there quick enough to give the receiver a chance to make something happen.

Pathetic, what a stupid reply by you. I am talking about one play and the exact circumstances of a running back who has never been in a scrimmage play being called on to do the pitch reverse.

Pathetic!!! I have been calling for counter plays and more deep passes from the offensive play callers for years. I have been very critical of our play callers running the same stuff into 8-9 man defenses for years.

Iowa State is an example of a weaker team that sells out on defense toward the first motion of the hawkeye offense and we have never tried to burn them regularly to make them back off. You need to run counters and fake them regularly to make the defense have to guess and keep them off balance.

I was very critical of KF for not going on 4th and 2 feet at Indiana in 2012 with a few minutes to go and within 3 pts with the season mostly in the tank.

KF has not been very good imagining and calculating risk-reward over the years.

I like CJ taking the shots downfield, heck when was the last time we had two TD passes over 4 yards in the same game?

Nice name calling. I remember when I was only 12 years old as well. You'll grow out of it.

What exactly about Kirk Ferentz and his ultra-conservative nature makes you think he would call on a player to run a play who wasn't prepared and capable of executing it? Are you assuming it's something that they have never practiced?

Hindsight is 20/20. The play didn't work. If it had this thread would not exist. We can all agree on that.
For all you know, they ran that play 20 times in practice without any issues. It just didn't work in the game.

Alright, no. I just disagreed with you. No need to get all butt hurt about it.

I think, by far, the worse call was keeping Mitchell off the field until midway through the last quarter with Iowa so far ahead. Who was responsible for that call KF?

I guess Canzeri has to be fortunate another healthy running back wasn't on the running back's bench after his latest fumble... Especially a healthy fullback/halfback waiting to play.

i like the new risk taking Iowa strategy. It makes games more exciting, and trick plays seem to fire up a team even if they don't work. sometimes they backfire, its the risk that makes it exciting.

I don't mind those. If the defense is willing to give up 5-7 yards, take it. CJ can get it out there quickly so it's been pretty effective.

.

You are the one using the word "pathetic" about people, calling people pathetic. I didnt call you stupid, I said you said something stupid.

It is so weird on this site where you try to start a simple thread to discuss items about hawk sports and then people call me and others pathetic. Weird.

The one thing you're forgetting is the excitement of getting on the field for the first time. Not a good place to work out the nerves.

I didn't care for using the fake with DMX in his first ever touch as a RB. That's really been my first criticism of Davis this year...which is pretty good

My take on it is I'm glad it was in that game at that point in that game... He decided to get cute and it burned em. Oh well. CJ threw a couple incompletions in the 2nd half too it happens. I think they'll either practice it more or pitch it from the play book. If they'd have tried that say this week in a tie or close game..... Different story. As far as the call itself as a type of play I don't have a problem with it. The coaches knew better then us what the situation was. So they decided to get new players that haven't played much (or at all) into the game in a fun way. For that I won't kill em over.

North Texas played off (8-10 yard cushion) a ton...I'm surprised they didn't do it more. If you watch the replay, a lot of times our weak side WR's would simply flip their feet in expectation of that throw coming. It must be something they are coaching if, on a called run play, if they get X number of yards of cushion to do that instead of blocking (maybe it's just runs away).

My only issue, and I use the word "issue" lightly, is that we don't throw more of those to Tevaun Smith. You are basically putting the WR out against a smaller DB in a 1 on 1 situation...nothing against McCarron or Vandeberg, but they aren't as physically difficult to deal with for corners who aren't much smaller than they are (and in McCarron's case, might actually be bigger). But that's really nit-picking.

I've always thought that was dumb too, but after reading your post, maybe the corners play smith tighter. Just a thought.

I might be guilty of overstating what I thought I saw, but there was what seemed to be quite a few instances of that large cushion when I really expected CJ to whip it out there to him. I remember one time he actually did it, because Tevaun slipped through the tackle and got about 8 yards.

Gotta support previous poster. If you don't understand acceptable risk for high reward vs. high risk/ low probability for reward than I can't help you. In card sense its like trying to draw an inside strait with a large pot vs. trying to fill a flush with several players going all in. One move is just dumb and will make you lose, the other could also make you lose but the reward would be worth the risk. What we want is for Kirk to be unpredictable on play calling. Not just field goals. To Kirks credit this year the offense is Very unpredictable. Davis is mixing it up and I don't see CJ making too many audibles so it must be him. Remember Fry was the psychology major and maybe Kirk is trying to get into peoples heads but it really is out of charecter for him. Or is it! Man I think he's in my head now!

My first thought sitting it the stands was simply "What the hell, why would you have a guy on their first college carry have to pitch it inside your own 20".

Davis called a really good game overall and the players really executed but this was a weird call. At least make it a handoff instead of a pitch. But especially you need to have DMX and Wadley run some straight ahead blasts and zone runs to get their yards and get some contact.

I am glad we are showing some jet sweep and reverse action and carries to keep the defenses honest on the backside and safety pursuit.

DMX and Wadley looked good especially with Daniels still nicked up.

Because we were playing North Texas, maybe the worst team in collegiate football. They should have tried like a triple reverse flea flicker with a hook and lateral at the end of it. That North Texas team was terrible. Its like where do you even start to fix that team.
