Great game but hawks need to take it to the rack - missed way too many opportunities

The hawks offense was again very good at ball movement but the second half shooting was suspect.

Man, they attacked that zone and got the ball 6 feet from the bucket and kept settling for little jump shots.

Cmon, get aggressive and with one step you can dunk or lay it in.

Woodbury played well but could have had 16 points. He should be able to take that feed he gets 8 feet from the bucket and take one stride and dunk it for a bucket and one.

McCabe took it to the hoop once but then settled for short jumpers. You could see Fran on the bench wanting them to take it to the hoop.

Dont get me wrong , I love the win and they played pretty good but...

How many of you think they should have won by 25? I think if they finish the great shots they had in the second half they might have won by 30.

This. Someone teach Woody that it's alright if he dunks the ball. Heck, I wouldn't care if he picked up a charge, attack the basket son. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Woody is not physically capable of doing this.

I totally disagree. He needs to work on his footwork. He needs some big guy training so he can catch with the right pivot foot and take one stride, sky and dunk. He can be a beast if he gets that down.

He played well, he made some tough moves, rebounded well and played pretty good Dee. but if can be scary in the middle it will really open up the perimeter.

Honestly, I think some of the guys started looking ahead at halftime. They know their BTT starts for real tomorrow. I was kind of glad to see some dumb mistakes in a game we couldn't lose. Now don't repeat them when it matters. Michigan State could easily make some of these little mistakes tomorrow in their 1st BTT game contributing to an Iowa win.

I've said it several times. I think the teams that win on Thursday have an advantage on Friday...obviously need some talent to actually get the Friday win. Iowa has the talent and Indiana better be ready to play. Illinois in Chicago is never an easy out.

Why take it to the rack when you are wide open from 8 ft. just have to make the shot. Agree it isn't Woodbury's game to be at the top of the free throw line to drive/shoot a jumper. That's up to Fran to put someone in the middle who can shoot very well and can drive if the open shot is not there. Basabe and White would be the ideal players for that situation.

Woodbury needs to develop a jump hook, no one could stop it. Maybe next year.

Yes, MSU sitting around and waiting to play their first game on friday at 8 pm is good for the hawks. We got to hit those easy shots.

Not sure what the hawks shot in the second half but it probably wasnt great.

They did hit some big 3's which was great to see.

Defense played great and not sure why basabe was sitting so long in second half.

It was strange to not have Basabe in the middle. He would have chewed that zone up.

Fran may have been saving him for the football game tomorrow night. Basabe needs to be fresh and ready to go to war in the paint.

You take it to the rack because 1) we arent hitting those little jumpers and 2) to get fouls and made baskets.

I am just saying they need to be more aggressive.

Basabe played great tonite and not sure if he was in foul trouble but he sat for nearly 10 minutes of clock time it seemed in the second half

Yes, when he finally came back in with 5-6 minutes to play he immediately hit a nice jump hook, a big shot.

I hope the refs dont swallow their whistles. The hawks seem to like to play basketball not rugby.

Kirk Goldsberry of Grantland recently did a piece on NBA shooting. He demonstrated that shooting percentages on shots between 4-7 feet are actually lower than percentages on much longer shots, with 4-foot shots having the lowest percentage of all NBA shots. The thought is that these shots aren't long enough to require normal shooting rhythm/form/strength, they are too short to be true lay-ups, and they tend to be disrupted by shot blocking presences more often. It was really an enlightening piece on the low value of "bunnies."

I really don't care how they call it if they're consistent. McCabe and Woodbury love to get down and dirty. I'll be upset if Woodbury, McCabe and Basabe all are sitting with 2 fouls in the 1st half while Nix, Payne and company are mauling our guys and MSU has 2 team fouls at the half.

Yes, and players dont practice those shots much. they are either shooting 3's or working on pivot moves for layups.

Woody is a very good passer in the high post.

And I disagree with this. I don't think Woodbury has the explosiveness to catch the ball in a more or less stationary position, take one step, and dunk. He needs to have his momentum built up (ie on the run) in order for him to dunk. That's not a knock on Woody; he's going to be a great player. He just isn't a very good athlete.
