Great article on Ferentz's decisions today by Morehouse

“I thought just get the points right there,â€￾ Ferentz said. “I was confident we’d get a stop, or I was hopeful we would get a stop.â€￾

What. Kirk must have a tumor if he thought our D was going to stop anything.

Not a good read, KF is the main reason Iowa does not have their way with bottom feeders like they used to.... ultra conservative and never changing the game plan = easy to get ready for.

I was just going to say the same thing.

Better Ferentz teams than this one have lost to worse ISU teams than this one. Bad teams to get to hang around far too long (see: all of 2009). Northwestern is taking a page out of the McCarney book of How to Beat Iowa, and there's no reason to expect it will change going forward.

And now Rhoads is taking a page out of Northwestern's book. Vicious cycle.

It doesn't seem to matter much who's coaching ISU these days. Those guys over there just seem to want it more, year in year out, even when they get beat into a pulp. And it has shown a lot lately with UNI too: 2 years ago against us, and last week against ISU.*

It's college football; every game is NOT the same except to our head coach and his NFL mentality.

*Considering some of the results we've been seeing lately, I'm not sure whether D1-A football is getting that bad, or parity is on the rise. OSU only beat Toledo by 5. Nebraska is struggling with Toledo. Minnesota & Purdue lost.

Yep, totally illogical.

The evidence was there all afternoon long ... We could not stop the 'vaunted' ISU offense and we were not going to. We needed to kick the conservative approach to curb both of those instances (sitting on the ball at the end of regulation, and then kicking the field goal after ISU was penalized -- giving us a 4 and 1). I field goal was not going to win this game. Being conservative potentially cost us the game -- oh, and our lack of a defense :)

Sorry Spank....weak sauce.

The writer's painting a purely "black and white" scenerio....not buying it.

Iowa needs to adjust as circumstances and game-time situations warrant.

We hadn't stopped Jantz the entire 2nd half. We were gassed. What makes KF think we're going to get a stop in the 3OT? Makes no sense.

It's an apologetic article.

Let's face it. Inexperience does make a difference. Your asking kid's who were playing a lot in this game for the first time who last year was wondering what it would be like to be out there besides special teams.
I would like to believe that if some of the boys who moved on were on the team this year would have made a difference because of experience, you would not have this talk.
We all know that fresh blood has to appear sooner or later. Gran it kid's like Davis, Kirksey, Martin-Manly, Avis, Nardo, Tobin, Morris didn't play much last year if I am not mistaken. He looked a little timid at times, and whomever else I am missing really havn't had this game experience until this year's game. That does make a difference. Not saying that they won't be good, they are not the Vandervelde's, Clayborns, Ballards, Sashs DJK's and whom ever else. Will they? Who knows.
The clowns have kid's that are in their 5th year or have played in the game 2 or more years and were absolutely hungry for this game. Jantz just fed off the leadership and the crowd. He had no idea what does game really meant to both sides. Yet alone his team. He made a big difference not to take that away. It might have been a different outcome if you had more sound experience out there today for the Hawks than last year.

And no comments either from the staff or the writer as to why we sat on it with 1:17 and two TO's remaining when all we needed was a field goal?

Not buying it.

Meh, the article was ok. I have no problem at all sitting on thd ball to end regulation. I think everyone in the house (both sides) knew we should have gone for it after the penalty.

That said looking at the whole package Id rather have KF than any other coach in America.

Maybe OUR coaching staff could try firing up the players?

"“I thought just get the points right there,” Ferentz said. “I was confident we’d get a stop, or I was hopeful we would get a stop.”

That is the biggest joke of this article. KF and Norm were the only two out of hundreds of thousands watching the game that thought THIS defense could stop the clowns. This staff certainly is NOT going to trust the offense to do anything. They break the offensive players spirit because the offense KNOWS they will never be trusted to get the job done.

When will the Iowa media really start asking tough questions instead of kissing this staff's a$$ with polite little questions.

If you are an Iowa fan, you have to act like our coaching staff and now our team...KF is going to be here because Iowa likes him, he is a nice guy. Fans have to become uninspired, unemotional, realize that Iowa has to play with fear and play scared. This staff has no balls whatsoever...even on a 4th and one. They ran the back 35 times all day mostly into a wall of ISU players just to prove (well I don't know what they were trying to prove).

BUT they couldn't and wouldn't trust the offense to gain one yard. Instead they trusted a defense that could not stop a high school team that day.

There is caution and there is caution...the caution that Iowa takes is playing scared. I would imagine a new player coming to Iowa can learn Iowa's offensive playbook by heart in about 1 hour. Not much to learn. Hell, I think this staff mails our playbook to every team they play. Oh wait, they don't need to, the opposition ALREADY knows every play Iowa is going to use during a game...they just need to watch Iowa set up and they which of the seven plays Iowa will use.

Morehouse isn't adocating KF's decisions... he's just stating why. And it's reasons we already know. It just helps to remind Iowa fans of what we can expect. Why are people shocked Iowa sat on the ball with a minute to go, 2nd and 13, 50 yards from FG? We shouldn't be. Because this is KF. It's what he does.

Did I want Iowa to take a chance, hell yes. But I KNEW they weren't going to. Because that's Kirk. You take the good with the bad. You take these types of losses because you know that you are going to get win just the same by using the same philosophy.

Have to take the good with the bad, even if you don't want to.

I was hardly shocked by the decision. I knew it was coming. That doesn't mean it doesn't p*ss me off.

Exactly what I was going to say. Everyone, including opposing offenses and defenses know what is coming all the time, as well as the fans. I've been a big supporter of KF for a long time but his unwillingness to change is unbelievably frustrating.

It's absolutely frustrating, but it shouldn't be. Why? Because it's par for the course. We know what to expect.

It's not 100% inevitability like death, but Kirk being conservative is a near certainty. With that in mind, what do you? Just have to live with the fact that his conservatism wins a ton of games for Iowa and loses some too. You gotta take the bad with the good.

1. The 4th and 1. We can argue about this all day and never get anywhere. I think it was the wrong call, but you can argue both sides. In this case, I agree with you. I guess I'll have to take the good conservatism with the bad.

2. Sitting on the ball. This one is flat out wrong by KF, and, I'm sorry, but there's no realistic, logical defense of this tactic. We didn't reduce our risk of turnover by sitting on it. We merely moved the incurrence of this risk from regulation to OT. On top of that, we forfeited our chance to win the game with a FG drive in regulation. We gained nothing in exchange for something of value. It's flat out illogical strategy. In this case, no, I will not take the good conservatism with the bad b/c there is nothing good about this conservatism.

P.s. I never complain about our general playcalling or defensive scheme. There's no way to isolate what's right and wrong, so it's hard to say what would be better. On the matter of sitting on the ball though, it's pretty cut and dry.
