Great Alaska Shootout

Just saw a tweet from Iowa Basketball selling packages to fans to attend the Great Alaska Shootout next December. What would make anybody want to go to Alaska that time of year? You probably only get 4-5 hours of daylight each day and it's colder than Rosanne's vag. I would rather take an icepick top my balls.

can't say I have ever seen "Rosannes' Vag" and "an icepick top my balls" used in the same paragraph before. Well played.

Actually due to it's proximity to the ocean, the average highs and lows in Anchorage in December are very comparable to Cedar Rapids. You are correct about the amount of sunlight. All the same, I will not be going.

Wasn't the Great Alaska shootout the springboard to the 86-87 season? Or was it the following season? I know they played up there a couple times during the 80's....... I will just look it up.

Who would want to go to Cedar Rapids in December? Brrrrrrr.

Am I correct to assume that this tournament is not nearly as prestigious as it once was?

This is a tournament Iowa really needs to win next season, none of the teams in this tournament will be any more tougher than what they just faced in the NIT. Three wins on a neutral court against a couple of potential top 100 RPI teams will go a long ways at the end of the season. Hopefully they avoid playing the host as Anchorage is DII and a win against them does not count towards the RPI.

Based on the extensive RPI education I received this year it would be better for us to play the DII school than a bottom of the barrel DI school so...

You and I both bro. I now know more about the RPI than I ever cared to know.

For a warm up game, might as well. But this tournament is at a neutral site so each win counts 100% towards the win percentage versus .6 for a home win. So I hope they avoid playing Anchorage.

But yeah, the way the RPI works you are better off playing DII than a bottom feeder from the MEAC.

You are correct, sir!!

Back in the day (80's and early 90's) the GAS was a tournament attended by many of the top teams. The reason? It was one of the first 'off-continental-US' tournaments and thus the NCAA didn't count them as games. Since then, the NCAA has (rightfully) started counting these tournaments as part of your non-con schedule. But there are other tournaments that are in warmer climes, so teams would rather be in them.

Just my recollection and $.02. I could be wrong.

GO HAWKS!!!
