Govt Agencies and Colleges Demand applicants Facebook Passwords

Red Tape - Govt. agencies, colleges demand applicants' Facebook passwords

The title is a bit misleading as an ACLU sucessfully sued to prohibit asking for passwords, but that hasn't stopped some private companies from asking potential candidates to open their facebook page and scoll through things on interviews, or schools from aggressivley monitoring athletes and students pages through compliance officers or coaches.

What does everyone think about this?

PS I'm hoping the fact it pertains somewhat to sports keeps this out of the cave.

Facebook isn't "private."

I think people have the right to say whatever they want on it, but institutions have the right to not hire someone based on what they said as well.

Access to people's passwords is not cool but I have no problem with people being held responsible for what they post on a public forum.

Fact is, if someone hires you or a school accepts you you are a representative of their institution and because of that, they want to make sure you don't make them look bad among other things.

This is flawed, there is an option not to post it.

Before I go into interviews and such I have always "deleted" my Facebook account. I know the information is probably still out there somewhere....but it's a lot harder to find. I never post anything bad, use similar logic to what Boat posted...but why should my personal views on issues, or people, or anything like that affect my application/nomination? I have gone to a lot of work to maintain an online presence...if you don't believe me google yourself...you will be surprised what you can find...you're signed up/have information on a lot of sites out there that you never signed up for. I have been very aggressive in deleting those profiles and anything else I can find.

Another excellent reason to not have a facebook account .................... also another excellent reason to live in a cave and fling your poo at anyone that approaches.

I set my profile to private anyways so it's harder to find at least and I don't friend people I don't know so that helps too.

There are quite a few people with my name so I don't know if that's a good thing or not. One person with my name has a DUI mugshot so I'm sure that's not cool.

I set my profile to private so only my friends can see my 'public' posts but only selected friends so family members and work associates cannot see them either but if you are forced to give up your password then private conversations you have with your friends can be viewed as well. That's like demanding to read through your private emails in my opinion. Some of these young athletes have shown themselves to be too immature in their public posts, so when they're a representative of a school I think their public posts should be monitored but nothing private.

That would be a good time to just delete your facebook and never use it again. Can't give them access to something that you do not have.

Exactly...Facebook actually has a temporary delete option too...really no reason to be using facebook around interview times and such.

I know for a fact my current boss did some snooping because I saw he viewed my Linkedin profile before hiring me.

Your online "reputation" is VERY valuable and something you need to protect. And one of the reasons that if JDM ever went to real names would be the day I stop visiting HN.

I have a limited Facebook page and don't post anything stupid plus I only have close friends on it. Sorry but no one is getting my password or having me log in infront of them. If they want to see my profile they are going to have to look up what the public can see (which isn't much since its limited) or hire a private eye to pay one of my friends (which only a few have the full access) for access.

Sorry but to me thats private. I can understand a drug test and a background check but they ain't coming to my house to see if I make my bed and they aren't seeing what size my wife's breast are. Where do you draw the line? I draw it soon and I stand firm on it. Jobs other than CIA or FBI should only be able to: Check your education background, criminal background, reference background, and drug test. Anything that is public is fair game but your not getting my Facebook password and I'm not showing you what me and my friends talk about on our yahoo fantasy football message board.

THIS AIN'T COMMUNIST CHINA.

I had one add me before the interview and I have my FB set up that everyone is on limited profile unless your close friend or fam. So he was able to see what he could've saw on the public search (profile pic, some info on my favorite movies, quotes, book, and networks).

He did ask about that and I told him that everyone is on a limited profile expect family and it's just essentially an email/Skype for me and the fam that are overseas with pictures. He thought that it was genius and told me horror stories of how he saw public profiles with pics of buddies mooning, chugging beer & puking, updates that should've been in diaries, etc.
