Goodson

What reasons might there be for him to NOT be playing 25ish snaps and get 10 or more touches a game?

Knowledge of O? I haven't seen him make a slow decision out there on the field he seems to know what to do on any given play

Blocking. If he's not very good at that yet so what. Don't put him in a situation where he'd be asked to then... Duh

Fumbling. I haven't seen him do that yet so... No worries there

I'm struggling to find another reason if any of you can help me out. But clearly with what he brings to the table he should be getting some significant touches out there. I'm not saying give him bell cow touches yet (nobody seems to be in line for getting those anyway) The guy is a big chunk play/HR hitter and just the threat of him out there has value. Might be time to take the training wheels off and see what kind of damage he can do.

Goodson is second on the team in touches. He likely doesn’t have the entire playbook grasped yet but the coaches are doing what they can to utilize his abilities. They'll continue to get him the ball more and more as the season wears on. People are trying to create a narrative here that simply isn’t there.

No, there's something more going on. There has to be. He's probably in the dog house. Kirk doesn't like him. Hell, Kirk doesn't like any freshmen.

According to the stats I seen Young has 1 less carry and 49 more yards.
That along with the fact being a freshman, Goodson more than likely has more carries than Young, towards the end of the game??
He is going to be special, but let's slow down a little bit.

But when have those touches taken place? Mostly in 4th quarters and garbage time. The other 2 RBs split carries for 3 Qs with Goodson getting the 4th to himself so far. The game is called differently and isn't the same as opposed to the start and meat of it. I'd like to see more of him when it matters.

The other RBs are also reasons for not playing him. They aren't exactly chopped liver either. If Iowa has 30-45ish touches a game to split up (rushing & receiving) it gets tricky with as many guys as we do. I just think a capable HR hitter should be out there as both a threat and weapon more then just a handful of touches in garbage time.

I'm sure it has to do with blocking, Sargent and Toren being pretty good themselves, and just the fact that he's a freshman. He's getting more snaps than I thought he would so nothing to complain about from me.

And if he goes in when it matters and gets stonewalled, or worse starts coughing it up or worse yet gets injured, then you will understand why the coaches were breaking him in gradually with fourth quarter and garbage time carries.

Goodson will be fine. He was in the backfield, and carried the ball, during that first series at Iowa State. He will get his, and in meaningful situations. This isn't 2013 anymore.

Picking up the blitz is one. He is young and has a lot to learn there. I would say that is the biggest.

I will say though I bet he gets more and more included in the offense as we go through the season. So be patient.

Our backs as a group, including Goodson, have been very good so far at picking up blitzes, better than the backs in the Bethard era anyway. It has only helped Stanley and the passing game.

Young has had a couple long runs where he pretty much wasn’t touched. That run he had Saturday would have been a touchdown if it was Goodson.

Yes and we’ve really only had one game that was close. Against Iowa State he was T-2nd in touches with IKM at 6 (3 carries / 3 receptions). That was also a game where a fumble would have been a killer.

The coaches are working him into the rotation. If he doesn’t play much in the next few games and we struggle you’ll have your opportunity to bitch. Right now we are 4-0 and he’s second on the team in touches and got meaningful snaps in the only big game we’ve played.

Maybe.
But if we are going to play that game, one might say that against a worn out defense in the 4th quarter, Young would have tore it up.
I'm not into the maybe game.
All of our RBs tore it up Saturday. I’m just saying Young’s stats are a little inflated by a few long runs. I can’t knock him for making those long runs but I think most people who have watched the Hawkeyes would tell you 10 & 15 are the two best backs, despite Young having the best Yards per carry right now.

I'm with ya. And yeah I'm not currently bitching. I'm fine with what's gone down so far pretty much. I'm just preemptively advocating for him to get more as we get started on the meat of the schedule. If we beat Michigan by 10 and he hardly plays I doubt you'll hear me bitch. Not right away anyway ;)

I’m with you on that. I want him on the field early and often against Michigan Saturday. I’ve been advocating for something like Sargent 15 carries, Goodson 10-12, and IKM / Young the rest depending on situations.

I'd almost throw out the MTSU game. They were small and out matched. It was practically a practice session. Most yards under KF

Plus look, Wisconsin absolutely beat the crap out of Michigan and totally dominated them.
Let's not get cute here.
We need to go out there and punch them right in the mouth. Hard hitting football.
They have a freshman middle line backer and I would work that.
Basically last year's team of hard hitting up the gut and getting a lb in coverage on a te.
Our ol should be able to handle their dl, and we should be able to stress their lb's.
Once the db's start playing up, we should be able to hit the seam.
This is exactly the type of game Brian should Excell at calling. Nate with experience.
This is what college footballs version of the Patriots should look like. (Patriots when they had a little better run game)

Iowa is going to need all 4 backs this year. Some games and matchups will lend itself to a certain type of running attack. My question is what's the hurry? Did we not learn that more snaps and playing time doesn't automatically equate to better output? It's not like the other backs are not being productive. Having this type of depth is a luxury IMO and as long as long as TG continues to produce and not turn the ball over, he will get his.
