Good Hawkeye Writeup - Predicts More of the Same

Special teams are bad because we have bad players.

There are no Roths, Sanders, Greenways

we have Mac level recruits and walk ons

I wish it was just bad players but it's not. Most teams don't play their starters on special teams. They still manage to run back kick and punt returns for decent yardage, they can still cover punts, and they can still get good field position after a punt. The issue with Iowa is scheme. Having to fair catch every punt is because we have no system in place that allows for punt returns.

Yes, once someone fumbles a punt, Kirk over-compensates and demands all punts must be fair-catched. I wish his stuff would pucker up less sometimes.

Apparently with KF, it's all or nothing. We cannot try for a block punt as we're susceptible to fakes. And once we got burned with SEVEN fake punts in a row, we apparently cannot build a punt return as we cannot risk a turnover.

To the other poster who stated other teams don't play starters on Special Teams....that's still an issue with our players. Other teams have better depth than we do. They aren't trotting out left overs from small town Iowa, and expecting them to make the same plays our guys in the past did.

Yes we've always had some good small town stories, or low rated guys from other states. But recruiting has changed and we're no longer able to find these "diamonds". We don't have a B1G roster. I'm not even sure we have MAC level. We continually put OL into the NFL, and yet we're starting TWO WALKONS at the tackle position.

Our scheme is bad, and that just makes things worse. You get games like the MN, MD, and TN where we are so out classed and out coached.
