Good Day for Barta

Gary Barta hasn't had the best past month but put a tally on the good side of the ledger for him yesterday with Iowa winning the B1G baseball tournament championship. It might be a small tally but every little bit helps at this point.

It was hell of a hire hiring Heller.

True that Heller has been a hell of a hire. Be it luck, foresight whatever it was a great hire and they'd be lucky to keep him around going forward. But that said it provides zero shelter for Barta with what all has gone on. I don't know when he'll have cashed his last pay check but it's a matter of when not if. Possibly before football season/school year gets going is my guess...

I think they have a good chance and this could be Heller's destination. I think he's has strong ties to this state and I think Iowa provides him everything he needs for his program. He recruits very well for Iowa. If he's happy where he is at, I view him as a guy who would stick around. I think Iowa may be one of his dream jobs, actually. We'll see if that continues down the road after the shine of the facilities wears off. Winning will help, though! Actually, I think they are planning to upgrade the Iowa stands even more.

One of the major job functions of an AD is hiring the right coaches as well as retaining them and I think you have to give Barta credit in this area.

Ferentz
Fran
Heller
Brands
Bluder

I would say the Iowa coaches at the programs that matter have fairly good staff in place.

Bowlsby hired Brands.

Sorry- wasn't trying to imply he made all the hires. I was just saying hiring and/or retaining the coaches are a big part of an AD's measuring stick of success in my opinion.

I know for other's the financial impact is probably a big factor but for me, as a casual sports fan without ties to the University, I really only care if the sports teams are winning. You can probably make the argument that in most cases, if you are winning the positive financial results will follow.

I think the big money comes in because of the coaches, not the AD. That's why it's important to hire the right coaches. It hurts when you don't (ie Lickliter).

Agree that the Heller hire was great, even though Barta tried to hire anyone but Heller (offered Andy Sawyers, for example, but got turned down because Barta wouldn't make a financial commitment to the program). However, Heller had a little dirt in his background and he wasn't able to clear the hiring committee until he was the only name left on the table.

Bottom line though is he did hire him. Perhaps Lickliter wasn't his first choice either and had he got the guy he wanted there maybe that guy would have had great success. Luck definitely plays a part.

I will never defend the Lickliter hire, however I think at the time both Barta and the school in general wanted to go the conservative route after the Alford implosion. Keep in mind Alford defended a convicted rapist and fans turned their back on the entire program. As a result they wanted a wholesome dude over a flashy dude and Lickliter is what they got.

Again, not defending the hire, I hated it from day 1, but I can understand the line of thought.

Is that correct!? Figures Barta would stumble into one. Like they say even a blind AD squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
