Give it up for the defense

The defense played great from the opening play. super job, crisp tackling, just one or two explosive plays given up

Just a great game.

The D Line is playing well. I'm concerned about linebacker, especially MLB. Not making a lot of plays there.

The D and the DL, in particular, are playing very well. I see a bottom line of Alston, Jewell and Bower at LB. The DB;s seem set. With few exceptions, they were like glue, today.

This defense is really coming together. Going into the season, we had big questions about the back 7. Now, there is no question that DB is a strength, and really the weak link is Q at MLB. Jewell and Bower are the future. Both guys are amazingly consistent for Freshmen, and will only get better as they get more game time. I'd take King and Mabin over just about any pair of CBs in the B1G.

What's more, it's been really great to see Ott and Meier develop. Ott is a monster now, and Meier has been getting better every game. That mixed with the depth at DT has created a STRONG front 4. LTP and Davis are to my mind the best pair of DTs Iowa has ever had. They pair so well.

Great Defense that could be as good as any we've had at Iowa.

I think Kroul and King might have been the best pair.

I would have agreed until this year, though Ballard and Klug, and Babineaux and Luebke would be in contention as well.

But of all those fine pairings, I don't think any of them are what LTP/Davis are. Davis is a behemoth in there. Probably the most physically gifted DT Iowa's ever had. He requires a double team, like Babs and Ballard did. But I think he's better than either. And I think LTP edges out Klug. King and Kroul were a bit different. They played SO many games together, and I'd say that they played "with" each other better than any because they way they ran stunts was a thing of beauty. But both were less monsterous than guys like Ballard, Babs, and Davis.

Regardless, Iowa has a fine tradition at DT under Ferentz. Guys like Daniels and Cole also have had good college and NFL careers.

The defense has been a nice surprise, although I'm not sure there is much they could do wrong to overshadow the ineptitude of the offense. That said there is room for improvement but some nice play makers have emerged. The only thing the defense is really missing is to force more turnovers. Iowa's best defenses created a lot of turnovers at key moments. The season is still young though.

I disagree. Mabin Int was at a huge key moment. Powdermilk was doing his best Tyler Sash impression today. We've got 1 int per game, and nearly one forced fumble per game.

That is a weak spot for sure. Alston was supposed to be the best of the linebackers out there and he's really struggled this season.

Then we have Spearman and basically 2 walk ons. Let's hear it for the coaching staff KF sure CAN'T recruit LBs like Hayden's boys could.

Really?! Just graduated three great ones last year: Morris, Hitchens and Kirksey. Wow how soon you forget.

Undoubtedly becoming one of the better defenses at Iowa. I loved the D with Angerer and Edds, plus that awesome defensive line that gang tackled Georgia Tech all night....

Today the D held Purdue to one field goal.....

Sweet, Sweet Memories.....

D was great today, no doubt. On a side note, I thought Jonathan Parker played great. Best game as a hawk.

Here's what I do like about the LB play. Josey Jewell, Perry, Bower, Spearman
all getting experience and getting better each week. We have some depth there now, as well.
If both FB's get healthy, perhaps Kenny goes back to MLB, next year.

Well... come on... ya gotta see it from seepig's perspective... cause you
know Chad Greenway and Abdul Hodge were just a couple of chumps and
Edmond Miles... weak sister... LOL. And who would want Fred Barr?
