Get rid of the 5 sec call?

I would like to see the NCAA get rid of the 5 second call. I could see where the rule had value when there was no shot clock, but now I don't see it adding much to the game. The refs are reluctant to call it and thus rarely call it and it seems like their time and attention could be better spent watching the rest of the court rather than constantly counting to 3 and then spreading their arms and starting back over at 1. Others thoughts?

I'd have no problem with it and quite honestly I would have no problem if you shortened the shot clock to 30 seconds and got rid of the 10 second line. If some team wants to screw around with the ball in the back court for 25 seconds before setting up their offense let them. When they can't get a shot off in 5 seconds it's their own fault. Good teams would just play pressure defense if they wanted to put pressure on the ball at the end of the game. I'm sure I'm in the minority on the 10 second rule, but I've seen it missed in several games because of poor officiating.

Most of the time, when the official has to 'spread his arms' to signify that there is too much space, it means the the defense has done its job. The rule is all about rewarding solid defense, same as the shot clock. Keep the rule. Anytime a player has to back away from the goal in order to avoid being called for a 5 second count its a good thing for the defense.

Yeah, college basketball needs to be more stationary and slow. Cut the shot clock down to 24, and let them stand around all they want.

I got no problem with the rule, but we could get rid of it because it is never called. Most the time the defender is 3 feet away from the ballhandler and the official keeps put he arms out like they are two far away when they aren't.

There has to be some timing rule for offensive players & to reward good defense. Ohtherwise, you would have players just holding or hovering over the ball for multiple seconds if they wanted which is not good for the fan to watch. It promotes ball movement & turnovers which is what fans like.

Exactly, and a player can simply take one dribble forward and the count restarts. I am all for ball movement, but if a guy or team wants to slow down the game and not move the ball, the 5 second count is rarely, if ever, going to prevent that.

IMO these sound like a terrible ideas. If anything, they should more strictly enforce the 5 second rule. The 5 second rule puts more pressure on the offense at the end of games when otherwise someone could just stand there holding the ball for the entire shot clock. Also, if you eliminate the 10 second rule then that pretty much destroys or severely hampers strategy with the full court press. You are suggesting that these rules don't affect anything since they are rarely called, but that is flawed logic.

Couldn't agree more. Just because they aren't called all that often doesn't mean they don't affect the game or more importantly strategy.

I believe Basabe got a 5 sec called on him against Wisky.

Agree 100%. The rule's presence dictates that players move the ball and run an offense. Without it, I'll bet you would see alot more hanging on to the ball where there WOULD be 5-second calls under today's rules, and I think that would slow down the game more than it is already. No thanks. Keep the rule.
