Gesell

From what we've seen of his HS career, over the summer in the PTL, and from yesterday's scrimmage against powerhouse Quincy, I think many of us would agree that Gesell looks like he's gonna be a pretty good PG for the next 4 years. Not saying he won't be better than just "good", but, let's not jump the gun as in all reality, he's accomplished nothing yet at the D1 level. Come January / February? Maybe. But not yet. The concern I have is that as a point guard, I want that kid to control the team. To run the team. To play quarterback. To get everyone else on the court involved. I'm not so sure I've seen that so far. When a kid leads your team in scoring as he did yesterday, or when he comes damn near close to leading his team in a summmer league in scoring, what's that telling you? He shoots the ball to much? He's a ball hog? I'm hoping that's not the case. The last thing we need is somebody taking the ball out of the hands of guys like Marble, White, etc., only to jack shots up on his own. That aint gonna sit well if it continues, nor is it what this team needs. I keep hearing the kid can score at ease (and he's demonstrating that), but, leading a team he's not quite there yet.

Seriously? Trolling, you are doing it wrong.

If the shots are going in, why in the hell would you discourage him from taking those shots?

Imo, he did just fine leading the "team" yesterday. It is very important that he be a real threat scoring wise to open things up for the other guys even more. When the opposition has to pay attention to everyone on the court, a lot more good things can and do happen. He won't score as much every nite because he won't be the guy with the open shot, but he will then get the ball to the guys that are open as a result, and they will score instead. It is nice to have real scoring threats/options at every position. Plus, it appears that he is Gatens replacement at the ft line which was a concern of mine. Go Hawks!

Ball hog...really??? Please point out one shot that he took that you would have advised him not to have taken? No concerns here...

Yesterday, you're telling people to not overreact to beating Quincy.

And then, there's this post.

What the he** game were you watching. I didn't see him do anything selfish or take any bad shots. I'em beginning to think the other poster is right, we may have a troll amongst us.

Frankly, to be an NCAA caliber team, you need 5 or 6 guys that can score. Some nights it will be Marble; or White; or McCabe; or Gesell; or Basabe; etc. etc.

Against Quincy, Gesell was getting the open looks, so he hit them. Bob Knight always said that it was about hitting the open man and getting quality shots. Knight didn't care who did the scoring. I don't think Fran cares either.

Gesell is going to be an excellent player at Iowa. I just hope it is this year, because if it is, we're going dancin' boys

What about his stat line tell you he's selfish?

18pts on 5-8 from the field with 5-6 from free throw line, 2 steals with 3 assists and 3 boards.

Sounds solid, and he looked solid.
