Gesell 23 pts 10 asst and 6 stl
Ingram 16 pts and 16 rbs
the points are a minor fact, it is the rebound, sts and asst that stick out to me,
to me these are the little things that will make the team better when they get here

Thank you. For a while there it seemed as if everyone thought we only signed Woodbury with all the Woodbury threads. These guys will be an excellent addition as well. It is a position we have needed to get talent and depth.

Gesell really impressed me when I watched him in the Arizona tournament. He has a nice step back jumper which will help against longer guards. I also think he has a knack for scoring so I expect his game to translate.

Ingram intrigues me. Not sure what to expect offensively but his defense has been touted so that bodes well. He looks to have a pretty good build.

All five guys possess a lot of skills to get excited about. Kyle Meyer has been a force for Northview. Could be a Michael Payne-type of player for us. I love what Ingram and Clemmons bring defensively, and they already have proven to be excellent role players on their HS teams, which is what we'll be asking them to do for us. Bright days ahead!

Have you seen Kyle play?

Can you give a better comparison than Payne as most of us can't remember him and college basketball is a lot different now. Does he compare to a current player in college basketball.

thanks

Michael Payne never quite lived up to his potential, but was very good. He was one half of the Twin Towers along with Greg Stokes. He didn't jump well for his size and, I believe, he only had one dunk in his career at Iowa. It came in the tournament his last year. I believe Payne was the Illinois player of the year, and Stokes was player of the year in Ohio.....

Kyle Meyer is much more mobile and has more scoring skills.....

Cool..... I really first remember Iowa hoops starting around 1987 or 1988 when I was 8 or 9 years old and I only remember the star players.

Some comparisons go over my head that is for sure!

Jack's got a good handle on it. Kyle seems to possess some decent athleticism and a good shot from outside. He's also a very active rebounder. He's not what you would call an "athlete", though. I think he'll be a nice complement to Woodbury, as Payne was to Stokes.

payne was a good shooter too

i can not believe that Payne only had one dunk in 4 years at iowa.

say what you want about payne, but he was drafted in the 3rd round, 112th pick, whereas in comparison Stokes in the 2nd round at 57.

Payne was a McDonald's AA & was the Big Ten Freshman of the year as Iowa's starting center. He played on the great Quincy high school team with Illinois star Bruce Douglas.

Quite a recuiting coup for Lute. He brought in the Illinois player of the year (Payne) & the Ohio player of the year (Stokes) in the same class. As freshmen, Payne was more advanced than Stokes & started while Greg saw very little playing time. However, by the time they were juniors, Stokes was the better player.

Payne & Stokes are the reason that Brad Lohaus saw very little playing time, if any, until he was a 5th year senior. Lohaus came to Iowa a year after Payne & Stokes and, like Payne, was also a McDonald's AA. Payne & Lohaus were similar in height & weight.

Payne would have been a much better player if Lute would have stayed. He just didn't thrive under Raveling's tenure & system.

Forgot about the talent that Raveling inheritted from Lute. He did squat with it. But did manage to recruit very well for Mr. Davis.

IMHO Raveling would have been much happier working as an assistant coach with recruiting responsibilities, rather than as a head coach in a D1 program, especially one located in a "fishbowl" community in the middle of the country. He was a tremendous recruiter but not a very strong bench coach ... or motivator, for that matter. He was notorious for resting players just as they were starting to get hot from the floor, also slow in adapting to different strategies from opponents. Raveling wrote a book on rebounding and supposedly was an expert in it, but I don't recall Iowa ever leading the league in that category during his short time in Iowa City.

It is correct that Lohaus languished under Raveling. That was partly on Brad; a tall, thin, gangly kid when he got to campus, it took a while for him to add the strength and weight so that he was not bumped halfway across the floor playing with his back to the basket. And he never was much of a jumper ...

We have been so sorely in need of a true point guard since Jon Lickliter quit the team, they will be welcomed additions.

Lohaus was a McDonalds AA out of Arizona for Lute, Lute got the recruits, then left for Arizona citing the fishbowl as a reason to leave. i used to say Ravelling should have stayed to recruit and let Dr, Tom coach. they would have made a dangerous combination
Lute, Ravelling and Mr. Davis made Lick look like the biggest fool around with Licks comment about Iowa not being able to get top talent, even Mr. Davis got a few McD AA

I really liked Payne. The dunk stat is true, watched every game available. Always wondered why he didn't dunk the ball, but he made it anyway, which is the important thing. The dunk might have come in the Villanova game that we lost, Lute's last game at Iowa, if I remember correctly.....

:D

Completely forgot about Bruce Douglas.....

:)

thing is with Clemmons he is rated the #1 pg in Michigan and the 3rd best player in state overall, and he playes with the # player in state overall who is a MSU commit, it is this reason those in Michigan feel that Clemmons is being overlooked and underranked by the recruiting services, Clemmons is also putting up better #'s, Clemmons and Gesell will make the PG slot harder to defend in the future as there will be little to no drop off when one steps in for the other, and the fact that Gesell is used to playing the 2 the possibility of them being on the court togetther is a real possibility. Ingram has work to do on his scoring and shooting range so his minute will not be that great but he is a outstanding on the ball defender and will get his minutes to shut down the hot shooter

Herby, I always appreciate your comments and I agree with your thoughts on Clemmons. I have followed his career since last year and he is a gifted player that will add a ton to our roster. He can score if needed and he is a solid defender against the best talent in Michigan. Ingram is very similar. Both are underrated and will bring much to the Hawks. As I have posted in the past, Meyer will be a big suprise and both Clemmons and Ingram will be right there as well. Kind of funny, I saw Gesell out here in Phoenix and he tore it up, but I have little exposure to Woody. All in all I really appreciate your giving us updates. Thanks!!
