Gerry DiNardo At Hawks Practice Today

DiNardo on Twitter today dropping his thoughts about the Hawks. Nothing really new same things we all discus here. Davis and Manley have to step up, O line looks prepared, great teaching environment, ECT. He does comment on the D saying they are more energized then he remembered in the past and the most enthusiasm that he has seen in a Iowa D

I asked him to sum up his impressions of the Hawks in one word. He replied with, middle+. I assume he means that he thinks they're a middle of the pack team this year.

Probably correct. Iowa is 6-6 probably at best but will play hard and set up for a great 2013 season.

Well maybe it's a good thing. He's learned his lesson! Last year he was predicting a great year for the Hawks. He jinxed us.

now that McNutt is gone i expect Davis to improve on his 50 reception as a 2nd option at WR, and KMM to improve on his #'s of 30 reception as the #3 option as the loss of McNutts 83 reception will be split up. not sure why people diss on Davis for not having enough catches, if Davis had the #'s that people ripped on for not having, McNutt would not have had the #'s he did. as for drops all the recievers had their fair #'s of including McNutt as he dropped them himself. My concern is who will step up to be the 3rd option at # 3 for the WR corp. as Davis and KMM established themselves as the top 2 targets going into the fall

Haha, good April fool's joke.

No not April Fools. This team is closer to 5-7 than they are 8-4. So 6-6 would be a good season. Marc Moorehouse and Scott Dochterman said they think Iowa will battle to make it to 6-6 and a bowl game. Expectations are going to be extremely low going into this season but there will be a lot of excitement because of the "newness" of the offense, defense and staff changes though. Get these inexperienced players some quality reps and 2013 season will have exponentially higher expectations with returning talent and recruiting classes.

and this is based on What? no talent on either side of the ball or the youth?

I know this sounds crazy, but the only game in the first 9 games that would be a sure loss would be MSU...and I'm looking forward to seeing them without Cousins. They can line up and smash mouth us and that could be a major weakness for us...physical teams with the patience to make you stop the run. Iowa will put 8 in the box against Penn State and force them to throw to beat us. Their QB couldn't throw it in the ocean last year (outside of McGloin who is gone). We should be in every game in the first 9...outside of MSU if they are playing well.

McGloin is not gone.

What stinks is that I really don't think the Hawks can win all of the first five even though any good team would. Meaning we are going to probably have to watch them lose to somebody like Northern Ill or Minn again or Iowa St again. And they could lose two of those first five.

We might not be a great team this year, but our schedule is so easy that its hard to see us going below 7-5.

good to see how posters have little to no faith in this program with new Coordinators that people were screaming for to be better

I completely agree with DiNardo's middle of the road assessment. There are too many unknowns going into the season to consider much else, in my opinion.

Davis and KMM have both shown flashes but not yet the consistency to be a number one receiver. Running back is a blank slate going into the season. Who's to say what we'll have there. We lost our best OL. DL is going to be challenged all year long which is going to put pressure on our entire defense to compensate. Add into that the coordinator changes and there are questions everywhere save QB.

I have a hard time looking at our schedule and putting a definite 'W' next to any game.

Thank God it is only spring ball. I think that once fall practices start, then the intensity will dial up and it should give us a better feel of what we really should expect. Having Garmon and Hill will put a check on the rob situation. Having really any of the True Frosh will possibly make a statement. Then DeNardo and Grittheth can come back and get a better feel.
