Geno Stone Heading to NFL

Yep. Good, viable options are available. Merriweather taking over for Koerner and Koerner sliding to Stone's space is what I should have written. I'm sure Parker will give me a ring before anything is done.
Koerner will likely start, and for good reason, he had a nice year. But the thought of a Belton/Merriweather safety combo is pretty interesting, two very good athletes back there who could cover a lot of ground. We have some options for sure, but Geno was so dang solid.

I've just assumed Eppy and Wirfs are gone. It's surprising they haven't announced yet though. I figured they'd declare right after the bowl game.

Hate to break it to you guys, but Stone, Wirfs, and AJ leaving early in a year when Kittle is the most popular player in the NFL and TE recruits see LaPorta breaking out is a ridiculously good thing for this program.

This is an investment in the future, boys. Money in the bank earning interest.

Don’t be short-sighted and wish they’d stay for one more selfish year, especially when they’d likely not match the seasons they had this year.

Go get your money, boys, and make sure you @ those recruits on Twitter for us.

I agree and I think it is next man in as the hawks have Moss, Brents, DJ Johnson, Merriweather, etc in the back end to reload. Stone could be an absolute heat seeking missile on some plays and he was great at tackling, punching out the ball, etc. I would love to see him on the Bears or join Hitchens and Neimann on the Chiefs

I wish this staff would quit recruiting these 2-star guys that come in, work their asses off, play 3 years and then leave early because they're so good.

For the record, I enjoy it when guys leave early, for reasons Fryowa stated. Good for them that they're going to get paid, they were good for us, and continue to promote the school and program. It only helps us in the long run.

I love Stone and think he’s been a great Hawkeye.

With that being said, Hooker was a 6’1 210lb battering ram with great cover skills, DBOY in the B1G and great combine measurables and the best he could do was 4th round.

Ive got a real fear that Stone goes undrafted.

Can't blame him. Strong Safeties at Iowa take and deal out a lot of physical punishment. I would say Geno ranks as one of the more aggressive ones. Lots of wear and tear.

As a fan, it's a bit of a bummer. From what I understand, Geno has been pretty much the leader back there this year. Pretty much the way Amani Hooker was the leader back there last year. I hope that losing guys like that in consecutive years and graduating a middle linebacker this year doesn't catch up with Iowa.

I'm really hoping Craddieth sees the field next season. He was one of the recruits I was most high on last year.

Damn it, Rob. Bring some good news!
Good news is we still have plenty of talent back there. Moss played sparingly. Merriweather and Brents took redshirts. Belton showed potential. Koerner had his moments. Hankins will be a senior. DJ Johnson.

We never really gelled back there this year for some reason. I don't think Parker will let that happen two years in a row. There's experience back there now.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. He was passed by already by Belton. Merriweather has been ahead if him. Even Dvorak was on the two deeps over him. Iowa is bringing in Reggie Bracy who might be heard from.

I’d think it’s far more likely that Craddieth transfers than it is that he sees any real play time.

I got the impression that Craddieth was having injury setbacks. I don't have direct information, but I do remember Kirk Ferentz referring to injuries when Craddieth's name was brought up.

This is a similar discussion to Jonathan Taylor leaving early...Stone is in a position that takes a beating, and his shelf-life is limited. Go out there and make the Hawks proud!

Also, a very well written "thank you" on his way out.

I don't blame him for trying one iota and I'll be pulling for him, but, keeping it real, he's got a big hill to climb.

He's savvy and has a knack for making the occasional splash play, but, he's not nearly the athlete that Hooker is/was. It's just hard seeing his game translating to the next level.

Probably his only chance at a decent round is if he somehow blows it up at the combine, which is unlikely, otherwise he's probably looking at late rounds at best and struggling to make a roster.

I know this is the trend that things are going in, but it makes it that much harder at schools like Iowa when they lose their top talent to the NFL. Best of luck to him and likely the others going this year.

Years with a derth of NFL talent werent very good years.

But there are also years where it would be key. Iowa next year would certainly be better with Stone, AJ, Wirfs, etc. Imagine if Greene stuck around for another year in 2009.

Now, if Iowa reloaded with Big Time Talent it would be another thing (position after position). But, we are not exactly Ohio St, Bama, etc in that department.

If Chuck Long did not return for his senior year, would Iowa win the Big Ten?
