Geno Stone combine

Rough combine, measurables were not good and he looked bad in the drills. He fell down and was stiff. Day 3 if anything.

He didn't test near as poorly as I feared he would, and he's getting some good press from the tape analysts at the very least.

I doubt he would have gone any higher than he will after another season, and from what I understand, his family needs the guaranteed money now.

Unfortunately, he won't get drafted high enough to get guaranteed money, if he's drafted at all.

If Stone can make an NFL practice squad, the NFL minimum for practice squad players is $8400 per week. If he is on a practice squad for 17 weeks. That's $184k a season.

If Stone can actually make an active roster for a whole season, the NFL minimum is $495k a season.

Now if he goes undrafted and fails to make a practice squad, then he probably screwed himself.but otherwise, there is opportunity to make some quick cash now.

Time will tell, I guess.

Stone will still get drafted due to his tape. He has a good football IQ and is an instinctive player. I do not see him drafted by a team that thinks is going to start right away either. I don't think his numbers changed anybody's mind on him for good or bad. I'm still saying round 4-5.

Gotta be a second rounder to get guaranteed money, and even then it’s only half.

He’s gonna probably be a 6-7th rounder/UDFA on a practice squad somewhere making less than $200K. Those guys typically last a year and get cut. If he left college without a degree to get his family some money he ROYALLY fucked up. After taxes that’s going to be looking at $120-130K if he doesn’t make an active roster, and how much of that has to go to whatever’s happening with his family?

I personally think he screwed the pooch. Even if his senior year didn’t improve his draft stock, he would have a four year degree whenever he decides he’s done with football, and then he could go get his real estate license or work for a medical company like everyone seems to do and make a solid living.

Looks like he shouldn't have left early. That said...he can still return, get his degree and pursue those opportunities. If he at least makes the practice squad for a year, he'll have the cash to do so. Chasing your dream in the NFL isn't a bad story to tell in a job interview.

And at times on tape....kinda slow

I don't think he gets drafted. He was either the worst or near worst in virtually every single drill. He'll certainly get picked up as an UFA, but I don't see anyway he gets drafted.

There's no way we'll probably ever know, but I wonder how much the Iowa staff tried to convince him to stay. Both Ferentzes and KOK have NFL experiences, and Brian was involved with the Patriots who, like them or not, know what talent level works and what doesn't.

Everything I've ever read or heard leads me to believe that Iowa staff tells guys straight up and tries to give them the best advice whether they want to hear it or not. Kirk and Brian wouldn't have missed the mark this bad and told him he had a good shot. More and more I'm thinking he had mom or cousins or friends in his ear...

Also the real trouble is if he doesn't make a practice squad. or maybe only lasts a few weeks. Then he doesn't have any money to go back to college and life can have you riding a floor sweeper pretty quick. It's happened to plenty of former Hawks.

Only difference is he’s paying out of state tuition, food, housing, etc

If he and his family value education, he probably made a poor choice. Because leaving college with a degree & no debt puts you 5 steps ahead of most of your peers. And that is no longer an option

If they don’t value education, it’s a good choice. Take your shot while your young & healthy

Ojemoudia though ran a 4.45 which is pretty good. He didn't hurt his cause though I didn't see the rest of his performance at the combine.

Or he could just do like every other poor college does and take out a loan for his last year, maybe move some furniture as well

I have to imagine two solid years of tape means a heck of a lot more than a couple drills in underwear at Indy do.

Now the testing I don’t think anyone expected him to do great, and I don’t think his 40 time was really that bad.

He will have the opportunity at Iowa’s pro day to maybe show some more and impress a couple teams.

Whether or not he made the right decision who knows, and who knows what his situation is. I hope the best for him. The guy is a really good football player and I’d bet he can carve out a spot on an NFL team.

ESPN.com's top sleepers:

Geno Stone, S, Iowa
Position ranking: 6
Overall ranking: 53

Stone is never going to be confused for Isaiah Simmons at safety. However, his instincts are on par with any other defender in this draft class. The way he trusts his reads is unlike any safety prospect in recent memory. Against USC, he broke on a hitch route from Michael Pittman Jr., dove at the catch point and failed to break the pass up ... because the quarterback never threw the ball. It was a crazy play, but the even crazier thing is that he doesn't have that many misreads on his tape, despite putting up some plays like that. It's why he has earned coverage grades of 84.5 and 89.8 the past two seasons.

Reassuring things further is the fact Iowa has had a fairly strong track record of safety/slot types translating to the NFL of late, with players like Micah Hyde, Desmond King and Amani Hooker all serving as examples.

He has 2 solid years of starting experience and contribution to a good Big 10 defense. As well as a year of being a back up and special teamer as a TR FR. He wasn't going to get any taller, grow longer arms, or change much of what would have improved hiss stock position. His 40, 20ss and 3-cone would have minimal change with another year. At this point, he is what he is. I'm guessing he starts the season as a back up strong safety who contributes on special teams. He's like Amani lite.
