Gatens Frustrated - article by Rob Howe

This quote from Fran caught my eye in this article:

"For the first three and a half weeks of practice he was as dominant a player as I've ever coached"

Was he talking about Matt Gatens? Or Sean Sonderleiter? Or Alex Thompson? Kidding.

Gatens is a good player. I just remember always hearing about Thompson and Sean killing it in practice and nobody could stop them, than the lights go on and they suck.

At least we know Gatens can ball and have seen it. He will be fine in a couple weeks. Fans just needs to stay patient

Alex Thompson would be an interesting where are they now? I watched Sondy play last year for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants when I was down at the Well for an Energy game. He was still sporting the mop top looking just like he did in college. Great for a couple minutes, but lacsidaisical most of the time.

Confirmation that Gatens is not 100%. Hopefully he can heal up and be ready for the big 10 season. I am not sure that hand will be 100% this year, which it too bad because in all likelihood his play will be criticized? It would be nice to see Gatens as that "dominant" player that McCaffery witnessed before the injury!

Good article. I was ridiculously critical, and obviously unfairly, of Gaten's play, especially down the stretch. The missed three and the drive to the rack that got stuffed before he even left the floor was disappointing. I didn't realize he was ailing that much.

It's ok to be contructively critical. But this is even more reason for me, to believe that May should have beent the one taking it to the rack on our final possession. Not to mention he's bigger, faster, and stronger. I think Fran should wait until Gatens is fully healed to rely on him in the final moments of a tight game. But what do I know. :)

I don't mean to be rude, but did we really need confirmation? There's a reason Gatens was sitting the second half. His hand is not right. Which even further the question - shouldn't the ball go to someone else until he is 100%? Honest question. I know Matt wants the ball because of the competitor in him, but maybe it's better to give it someone who's 100% on the court.

Being the selfish Hawk fan that I am, I still wish that Matt would have red-shirted this year being as it is going to be a long one anyways. If he isn't capable of playing the way he should be then the question is obvious if he is doing more harm than good?

I'm not ripping on the kid. I think he is a great player. I'm just sayin..

It is not a surprise that he is not healthy. He just has not looked right and remember how much time he missed. Gatens is a very good player that will flourish once all is right. The good thing is that Marble has looked very good and May can play the 2-spot when needed. Gatens being frustrated is not a surprise he isn't right, but give it time he will be fine.

And the ironic (if that's the word to use) thing is that Matt's been frustrated for a long time. In fact, most of his career as a Hawkeye he has been frustrated.

Does seem a bit odd that he is sitting because of it and then you put him in the game at the end to try and win it for you especially when he admits that it bothers his shooting most of all.

When you start a post out I don't mean to be rude, what is it exactly you mean? As far as the answer to you other questions, well, I don't mean to be rude, but you would have to ask Coach McCaffery.

My point about the article being a confirmation was because I felt some have been unfairly criticizing Matt's play when he is obviously still recovering and he missed some crucial time before the season started.
