GATENS AND CARTWRIGHT TO PLAY ON ALL-STAR TEAM

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa seniors-to-beBryce Cartwright and Matt Gatens have accepted invitations to participate and represent the United States on an East Coast All-Star Team that will compete in the Four Nations Cup held in Tallinn, Estonia in August.

Cartwright (6-1, 180) and Gatens (6-5, 215) will depart for in late July for Williamsport, Pa. for a two-day training camp July 31-Aug. 1. After spending the second of August traveling to Estonia, the team will have an opportunity to go on a sightseeing tour on Aug. 3.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,†said Cartwright. “I get to practice and play with some of the best players in the country. Being able to play with student-athletes from different conferences, meeting new people and competing against international players will be a fun experience.â€

Cartwright, who averaged 10.9 points and led the Big Ten with 123 conference assists last season, has never stepped foot outside U.S. soil and wants to take advantage of this opportunity to its fullest.

“I want the full experience,†said Iowa’s point guard. “I want to embrace this opportunity and enjoy it. It’s going to be fun to see the different culture overseas and hopefully this experience will make me a better player.â€

After a day of sightseeing, the team will scrimmage on the fourth before three straight days of international competition. The U.S. will face Georgia (Aug. 5), followed by Estonia (Aug. 6) and Sweden (Aug. 7) before returning to the states on Aug. 8.

Gatens, who averaged a team-best 12.6 points and ranked second in assists with 53, is also excited for this opportunity to travel overseas.

“This is an opportunity for me and Bryce to see a different part of the world, travel, and meet and play with different guys and against top international competition,†said Gatens.

Glad to see Carwrights response about wanting the full experience. I was disgusted with another recent Hawkeye's whining about having to drive 50 miles to find a McDonald's to eat at while playing in Europe.

It is cool for Matt and especially Bryce to get his opportunity. Bryce indicated he has never been out of the country, and this is a nice reward/perk for coming to Iowa and playing so well last season. Matt gets his second international trip as a Hawkeye.
And yes, playing with and against top talent does not degrade their games one bit,as shown by the US Team last summer comprised of Durant,Rose,Westbrook,Love, ect,who have all gone on to great seasons in the NBA.

it was pry a joke. or he really loves america. but even in europe, MC ds are usually all over

but about Ptl, while their schedule will allow isn't it possible doing both may be overwhelming?

Haha, Jeff more than likely said it sarcastically or tongue in cheek and was probably not actually whining. I would like to see the actual quote though.

I can't seem to find the article just now, but it was definitely not his intent to be sarcastic or tongue in cheek. He was kvetching about not liking the food in Europe. He came off as the prototypical ugly american.

Sorry I drug this off topic. I am again, just glad that Cartwright appears eager to embrace new experiences. That is really my point.

The thing that impressed me about this is that Gatens mentioned his teammate Cartwright in the article. I think this is just another, albeit small, example of how Matt bleeds black and gold. Let's get this Hawkeye dancing. Go Hawks.

they should come out of the plt strong and ready for international play, since they only get 2 days of practice with the ECAS(PPTL will be agood thing) , hope they impress and lead.

I'd be open to the culture overseas. But if I don't like the food, there's not a lot that can be done about that. I've eaten plenty of things with an open mind and walked away dissatisfied.
