Garza has monster final game...

You have to wonder if Fran & staff are going to redshirt 1 or both. Not that they aren't ready to play but just for the mere fact of finding minutes for them all. They could develop for a year and come in and be a real force. In addition, Cook may leave after his soph year so we could than be a plug-n-play situation. I don't recall Iowa having this many quality post players for years.

Equally impressive is how Fran's building his outside game at the exact same time. Kinda weird!
If I had guess I'd say Garza plays and Nunge might RS. Most likely they both play. I think the odd men out are Uhl and Wagner as far as them fighting for mins goes. But I could be wrong we'll see.

Exactly what I took away from his tape. He plays like a big man is supposed to. I don't care if he can jump out of the gym or shoot 3s. Go up with two hands hard for rebounds and put backs. If he can hit 15 footers and have a soft touch around the rim he'd be a step up from what Woody ever was on offense.

Did you also notice that when he had putbacks, he caught the rebound above his head and never brought the ball below his head. Excellent work on keeping the ball up high. The advantage to that is twofold: 1) He doesn't immediately become 5'8" by putting the ball at his waist where anyone can get a hand on it, and 2) If he is fouled on the arm, the refs will definitely see it.

Yup that's exactly some of what I meant by playing like a big man. He clearly had some good coaching with how he was pretty good with the fundamentals of playing down there. If he can screen without fouling and hedge screens hard on defense at the college level he'll be an absolute monster for us I think.

Very talented and he has the Attitude that the Hawks have this season. He will fit in very well.....

Luke just might be more of a factor on offense than Woody......

Loved Woody and appreciated every basket he gave us, but he was a bit limited on offense. We could have used his D this season. Woody was vastly underappreciated for his contributions on D and his floor play. Loved his outlet passes.....

I do believe I would take Garza even if he had two left feet.....

Perhaps The Hawks have Never had this much inside presence.....

Wagner will get some minutes...he brings something others don't...a physical presence which is often underrated...

Kriener will get some minutes...he brings something others don't...a mid range jumper he will take and make...

Uhl...I have no clue...

His HS coach is Lefty Driesell kid, and he coached in college before he went to that HS. So yeah he was getting good coaching.

I have only seen about 10 mins of footage on Garza being he is from the DC area, but from the looks of it he has the desired post player frame. His body might be ready for B1G play already. However his fluid movement still leaves a little to be desired. He is clearly a force in high school. In college it won't be quite the same. In this last video he did display a few really nice plays. 1 play was a power dribble towards the baseline and then used his out side shoulder to box out the defender as he went up for the dunk. The other play was a turn around jumper from the elbow. These 2 plays represent what I believe the building blocks are for Garza and his future role as a Hawkeye. I would bet my lunch right now that Garza redshirts next year though. I simply don't expect him to learn the offense and defense fast enough to earn minutes from Cook, Pemsel or Kreiner. I don't mean that as a knock on Garza at all. After Fran has had Olaseni, White, Woody and Uthoff I think Fran and staff have seen and coached each one of the major big man skill sets. I am really expecting the total package out of Garza with 4 or 5 years to develop.

Tom Kakart had a great article interviewing Garza coach Chuck Driesell. Obviously he had some great things to say, but it kind of got my interest as he played at a high level himself, and coached D1 as well. I'll paraphrase as it was a pay article.

-He has good post moves, works on them hard and his game extends out to the 3 point line
-Areas he think Iowa can really develop with Garza are quickness, strength and conditioning
-Thinks if Garza can improve in those areas, he compared him to Frank Kaminsky. Said he can play back to the basket, and hit 3's. Obviously isn't as athletic as Frank.
-Said he is a hard worker, first in the gym and last out.

Can't have enough hard working players on a team...hope all the best for him and Iowa.

I was impressed with his mobility, albeit a bit gangly at times...lots of potential.

Post moves, keeping the ball above your head following rebounds...undervalued

I would imagine Luka is hanging with the Hawks this week.....

His future teammates.....

Have a feeling that he will have seats for the game.....
