Gary Barta, Kirk Ferentz & Fran McCaffery

Last night I had a dream that Barta, Kirk and Fran were fired and Jeff Long and Bielema and BJ Armstrong were hired. It was the greatest dream of my life. Would anybody take this scenario right now?
 
10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.......ok, I made it. I had to count to 10 slowly before saying something to the first person this year to mention BJ Armstrong as possible head coach....probably would have been very rude. Whew, glad I made it....I like everyone here.

I think it is so lazy to try the copy cat method. Whenever someone has success athletically the first thing others do is say hey let's do the same thing. How many tried to hire the next Dan Gable or Bill Synder or copy everything they did only to fail. It is just not that simple and I wish it was.
 
Just because the Fred Hoiberg thing worked in Ames doesn't mean that any former player with NBA experience and no head coaching experience would be as successful. Being a D1 head coach is not something anyone can do. Its also not something most people would want to do. I doubt BJ would want to be the object of everyones scorn whenever the Hawks lose.

There is no guarantees that BJ would work out but the fan base would rally behind him. Fran has been here 5 years now and I am pretty certain we won't be in the NCAA tourney again. I understand he took over a program that was a disaster but with that being said, this is year 5 and ISU's program is light years above ours.

BJ played at Iowa. He is a Hawkeye legend. He is very, very respected. He has been an NBA agent for several years. Bobby Hanson reported at the time we hired Fran that BJ wanted the job. I would have been estatic with BJ as our head coach. I would bet he could at least recruit some decent players/shooters. Our guard play this year is terrible and shooting has been horrible for years. Fran has brought the program a long ways, but 5 years into the program and no NCAA tourney yet. I believe it should be do or die time for Fran next year if we are not in the tourney this year.
 
I don't think BJ would be willing to change careers from a player agent (Derrick Rose and Draymond Green) to a coach.

However, we could hire a former Hawk who was a successful coach: Kevin Gamble.
 
Would people stop with the inapt references between Kirk Ferentz and Fran McCaffrey? Other than the fact that both teams lost to ISU this year, I don't see the comparison.

1) ISU football is a dumpster fire. ISU basketball is quickly becoming a powerhouse. It'd be great to beat them, but there's not shame in losing to them.
2) The Big Ten is terrible in football. The Big Ten is the best league in college basketball.
3) The football team's schedule was a joke. The basketball team will play 4 non-conference ranked opponents, and then play in the toughest league in the country.
4) Iowa beat UNC at UNC. That is a better win than the football team has had in years. Even if UNC isn't a world beater this year.
5) The basketball team has gotten better every year under Fran. This year might be a step backwards. On the other hand, we might get a better seed in the tourney than last year. Can you at least wait until after we don't make the tourney to start these ridiculous threads comparing Ferentz and McCaffrey.
6) The Iowa basketball teams plays a fun, fast style of basketball. The Iowa football team's offense is abysmal.
7) Fran gives minutes to players that perform even if they are young. Compare Jok and Uhl's minutes to Ogelsby versus ISU.
8) Iowa basketball has a great recruiting class signed for next year. You can turn around a basketball team by signing good recruits a lot quicker than a football team, especially considering how often Fertentz plays young players.
9) Fertentz's son coaches our mediocre offensive line. McCaffrey's son could be a top 50 recruit and a 4 year starter.
10) The Iowa football team went 7-5, and 4-4 in the Big Ten with an incredibly weak schedule. If Iowa beats UNI, they will go into the Big Ten at 10-3 with wins over two top 25 teams and needing to go around 500 to get into the NCAA tourney.
 
Hire a sports agent to be a coach. What could possibly go wrong there.

Hmmm...hire the Vice President of Basketball Operations of the Minnesota Timerwolves that never even coached a 3rd grade team. What could possibly go wrong there?

Or better yet....hire the national coach of the year from the previous year....I wonder what go possibly go wrong there.

Only a complete idiot would want to fire Fran right now. Some of you know so very little about college ball. It's sad that you're not afraid to show your ignorance to the world.

Let me help some of you out. Fran's biggest challenge when he arrived at Iowa wasn't a bare cupboard. It was perception. It was cleaning up a recruiting territory disaster left by TL and Bruce Pearl. He was fishing without a worm and had to work his butt off to mend broken relationships that were 20 years old in some cases. Unfortunately, rebuilding bridges take time. So he was forced to find diamonds in the rough and sign a lot of in-state players. Regardless of what he may say at I-Club functions, I don't think for a second that Fran cares about signing kids from Iowa. Few kids in this state have the skill set he wants for his system.

So now that he is gaining traction in Chicago of all places, some of you want to pull the plug and give Barta another chance to hire someone??

Lol. How far back are you gonna go back to try and make your point. 20 plus years to name a handful of Iowa kids who have made it. And of those, only a handful that fits into what Fran is looking for with this system?

Rigggggght. I'm the fool. By the way, I'm not accepting mediocrity either. I'm trying to prepare people for what will be coming in the future. We will always sign Iowa players obviously. But I think that the longer Fran stays and the more he establishes relationships, the smaller the numbers will be.

Everyone seems to want to model themselves after Hoiberg now. How many native Iowans are contributing on that team?
