His chief talent lies in marketing. The sun is always shining in Barta's world. He's also made some good coaching hires (and one notable bad one). His primary weakness seems to be in the mundane world of administration and process.Ive met and talked to him a few times. His biggest job is fundraising. At the gathering before the Iowa BB games in NYC last year he stopped at our table for about 10 minutes(it helped there was one of Forest Evashevski's players sitting there). The guy can definitely work a room.
I worked in downtown Davenport from 72-74 for a small car leasing company. The owner was a big Hawkeye supporter, personal friend of Forest Evasheski, & controlled some of the tickets for the Davenport Quarterback club. We had a lot of big donors stopping by the office frequently. My boss was heavily involved in recruiting Curtis Craig & Jim Jensen. He really took it hard when Curtis chose Nebraska. When Bob Commings was stumping for the head coaching job at Iowa, talking to Iowa Clubs, he was really upset that Bump Elliott was even considering him.Barta has done a wonderful job. The upgrades in Kinnick & Carver-Hawkeye have been excellent! Plus, the football & basketball facilities improvement has been substantial. His first big challenge will be replacing Ferentz. Remember, it took Bump three tries before he got the football hire correct. He brought in FXL & Bobby before Hayden. Bump struck gold with Lute, but Raveling & Davis were average at best.
Last time I checked, Barta's Athletic Department at Iowa = Dead last in the BIG.
Has that changed?
Barta is winning in football, men's and women's basketball, and wrestling. Those are the only sports that matter at Iowa. Iowa has brand new facilities in football and basketball. Fundraising is excellent. Barta has done a great job. People on this board don't understand the role of an athletic director. I predict Barta will be at Iowa far into the future.
Bingo!!All Barta has to do is come out and apologize for ruining the tailgating tradition, restore it to it's former glory and then even the most anti-Barta fans (myself included) will buy season tickets again.
It's not that hard, Barta. KF did some soul searching and decided to admit some faults. It's your turn.
Maybe invite him over your house and cook him a big wonderful breakfast. How to Be Better Than Your EnemyAll Barta has to do is come out and apologize for ruining the tailgating tradition, restore it to it's former glory and then even the most anti-Barta fans (myself included) will buy season tickets again.

Tom Davis average? You need to brush up on your history. Steve Alford was average.Barta has done a wonderful job. The upgrades in Kinnick & Carver-Hawkeye have been excellent!
