GameFilm: Offensive Line Grades vs ULM

Little different look this week from the OL as the Interior guys came out with pretty solid days and came out ahead of the tackles. Overall this group played very well as would be expected against the lesser opponent. There were a lot of big holes opened in the run game all day and limited pressure allowed on JVB. We saw more pulling up front again this week, including a toss sweep where Zusevics got out in front. With the odd front that ULM played, this was a pretty solid day for this unit.

I was a little concerned with Reiff’s play at times this week. Normally he’s in excellent position and uses solid technique in pass protection, but at times he was off balance and looked awkward. This wasn’t a high level opponent he was facing and I expected him to be dominant. His run blocking was fine but pass protection wasn’t good. Spoke to him after the game and he cited poor use of hands and footwork issues at times during the game. He’s got all the tools to be a excellent pass blocker but something was off this week. Hopefully this is something he’ll clean up in the bye week.

Great days inside from both Ferentz and Tobin. Each played their best game so far this season and I really liked what I saw from them. Both guys, and Tobin especially, have struggled with second level targets. However in this game each player consistently got out to the LB’s and opened the lanes in the run game. Gettis and Scherff rotated throughout this game and Gettis had a minor ankle tweak. Scherff is definitely raw but has solid tools that should develop as he continues to see the field. The interior guys handled the pass protection responsibilities well again this week against the 3 man front. Ferentz got the rushers counted up and did a nice job passing off the DT when he needed to get over to a blitzer. Overall it was an excellent day for this group.

Zusevics had a solid day and I really liked his athleticism in space in the run game. Iowa has been limiting themselves to mainly an inside and outside zone running scheme and with tackles like Reiff and Zusevics they could use more tackle pulls and have success. Coker isn’t a back who is going to have a lot of success out on the perimeter but with the emergence of the two smaller and quicker RB’s maybe we’ll see more outside toss plays. Starting to look at Zusevics as a guard prospect at the next level. Size is a concern but I really like how effective he is in a phone booth with interior guys. He may still be a guy who can play tackle at the next level but I’m starting to see a very consistent in-line blocker watching him week to week.

Reiff
-1 Got off balance here as the Smaller quicker LB goes speed to power and slaps back inside and spins Reiff around. Needs to be in better balance here D2 Play 2
-1 Got inside gap shotted by his head up DE. Big loss to give up when you’re backed up in your own end. D5 Play 2
+1 Excellent job in pass protection here as he holds his block for a long time as the deep in route opens up down field. Maintained solid contact and let JVB be comfortable in his own end zone. D5 Play 3
+1 Opened a seam outside here on the short side by driving the OLB way out of the play. Coker never got out to it but a good block none-the-less. D6 Play 4
+1 Excellent job reaching down to the DT inside as he gets his hips around and seals his guy off. D8 Play 3
+1 Good job controlling the DE here as he crashes and Reiff sustains the block back across the play. D10 Play 5

Overall: +2

Tobin
-1 Over-committed to the double team on the DT and his LB forces Coker out of the seam and into the unblocked safety. D1 Play 1
+1 Drives the DT 5 yards over and out down-field here on the zone play. Great drive block here as he wins laterally and vertically on his block. D6 Play 4
+1 Excellent job getting his hips around on the DT here and opens up the cut back lane for Coker. D7 Play 1
+1 Nice job getting to 2nd level here and finishes the block. Solid play here. D8 Play 3
+1 Nice job getting to the second level here and stays with his guy and keeps him out of the play. D9 Play 1
+1 Blew his guy off the ball here. Keeps his hold on him and drives him 10 or so yards down field. Great block D10 Play 6

Overall: +4

Ferentz
+1 Nice seal here on the DT as he gets his head across and keeps him out of the seam. D1 Play 8
-1 Missed the MLB after not getting a clean get off. MLB closes Cokers hole quickly. D2 Play 3
+1 Buried the MLB here as he got out very quickly and put him on the ground and kept him there. Great block D2 Play 6
-1 Got out to his LB but doesn’t sustain the block and Coker is brought down by his man in the cutback lane. D2 Play 8
+1 Excellent job getting to the LB and maintaining contact as he drives him out of hte play. D4 Play 4
+1 Excellent job getting out to the LB here and staying on him as Bullock cuts back. Nice job feeling where he wanted to go and denying him. D5 Play 4
+1 Solid angle to the LB here and washes him out of the seam giving Coker a lane. D7 Play 1
+1 Great job sustaining his block at the 2nd level. Excellent effort here. D8 Play 3

Overall: +4

Gettis
-1 Lost his guy at the POA here. LB shot the gap to his outside and Gettis clearly didn’t expect him to be that far up-field. Got to be ready for run blitzing LB here. Guy makes the TFL. D1 Play 6
+1 Good physical blocking here as he locks up the DT and drives him out of the hole and puts him on the ground. Nice block. D2 Play 8
+1 Excellent job hooking the 5 Tech here as he locks him up an drives him inside and opens a hole. D8 Play 2

Overall: +1

Zusevics
-1 Nice job handling initial speed rush outside but doesn’t feel the spin back inside very well and gives up a QB pressure here. Really needs to play this spin better and maintain contact. D2 Play 2
+1 Excellent mobility on display here s he pulls out and leads the toss sweep. Gets ahold of the CB in space and gives Coker a block to cut off downfield. excellent blocking here. D4 Play 3
+1 Nice job firing out to the LB quickly on the goal-line carry. Locks him up quick and pushes him back 3 more yards and lets Coker have enough room to get into the end-zone. D4 Play 6
+1 Great pass blocking here against his man here as he gives JVB plenty of time to survey the field. D6 Play 6
+1 Excellent job clearing the OLB out on the run play. Really drives him wide and gives Coker more room to work with. D8 Play 2
+1 Buries his head up man on the goal line carry. Blew him off the ball and then ground him out like a cigarette. D8 Play 7
-1 Didn’t get his head across on this reach down to the 5 tech and he ends up squaring up Canzeri in the seam. D10 Play 9

Overall: +3

Scherff
-1 Sloppy cut block allows his man to dive into the hole and get a hand Bullock. D10 Play 4

Overall: -1

Thanks Jon! I think blocking on the 2nd level is really difficult for Iowa's O line. Against a more typical 4-3, the focus is always on locking up with the down guys and letting the running back make the LB or safety miss. So, when Iowa plays against a 3 man front, the O line will get even more exposed on the 2nd level blocks, because they have to do much more of this.
