This was Marcus Coker’s best game of the year so far. He looked a step or two quicker to the hole most of the day and on a few carries made guys miss. Saw him use the stiff arm effectively a few times and that’s a must for him to be effective as the year goes on. He ran through a few more arm tackles this week as well. While this was a lesser opponent, a back can gain confidence and carry that over into the coming games. He was very solid in pass protection this week and was mixing it up with any free blitzers who came into the backfield. Solid game to head into the bye weak.
The bad news is Damon Bullock fumbled. The good news is he did it against ULM. As a freshman RB you never stop hearing about protecting the football and now hopefully it hits home. He showed some decent vision spotting cut back lanes but got a little over excited and carried the ball loose. Hopefully he’ll have learned his lesson and move on. Jordan Canzeri showed burst to the hole that I haven’t seen out of an Iowa back in the last two years. He looks to be no more than 185 pounds but he can fly. Showed some balance and strength staying up after contact on his debut run as well. With his red-shirt officially burned I’d expect to see him get more opportunities in coming weeks. Both Bullock and Canzeri look like guys who can be effective in the passing game, especially in the screen game.
Another day of few targets for the TE group. Only 2 catches and just a few additional targets for the TE group this week. Herman also saw the field sparingly in this one and I’m not real sure why. Derby looks to be the guy they like in the no huddle sets and that may have something to do with it. CJF saw some targets this week drawing a pass interference penalty and getting a catch. As a group the blocking was not good. Lot of issues getting to their second level targets and even when they did they struggled to maintain contact. Would expect as Iowa gets into their Big 10 schedule this group will get more and more targets. Definitely some things to clean up for this group over the bye week though.
The WR’s continued to shine this week as they piled up yards, catches and touchdowns. I really liked the body control displayed by this group again this week. McNutt's stock continues to rise each week as he continues to be nearly perfect on fades on the outside. All three guys are threats to go vertical on any given play and it shows in the cushion and over the top coverages we’ve seen thus far. When teams try to commit to stop the run it’s going to leave these guys on islands with man coverage. The I formation 3 WR set is going to be something Iowa can use to create some mismatches on the outside if teams try to stack the box to deal with the run. Looking like a big year for the Iowa WR group.
Coker
+1 Great cut back under the blocks of his line and breaks a tackle and stays on his feet and goes for a big gainer. Excellent run here. D2 Play 6
+1 Excellent speed to the edge here as he follows his blocks and uses hte stiff arm to pick up a few extra yards. D4 Play 3
+1 Fastest to the seam he’s been all year on this play. Runs to space, not contact and picks up 9. Great job attacking downhill here. D4 Play 4
+1 Excellent stutter step here as he makes a guy miss and picks up a big gainer. D7 Play 1
+1 Nice job beating a tackler in space again here. Nice run. D8 Play 2
Overall: +5
Bullock
-1 Makes an effort in pass pro here but gets absolutely blown up trying to take DE high. DE had a head of steam and Bullock needs to cut him here. D3 Play 1
-1 Makes a great cut to find some space but tries to bounce it all the way ousidde when he had a seam for 5+ yards. Then gets it stripped as he gets a little loose with the ball. Big mistake by the freshman here. D5 Play 4
Overall: -2
Herman
-1 Took a poor angle to the LB here and he flies by him and hits the pulling guard in the hole disrupting the play. Needs a better effort that this. D8 Play 5
Overall: -1
Derby
+1 Excellent job re-routing the crashing DE here. Gives his back a chance by washing the DE where he can’t do as much harm. D8 Play 7
Overall: +1
CJ Fiedorowicz
-1 Missed his block on the LB here. Made solid initial contact with the guy but didn’t maintain contact and he clogged the seam as Tobin tried to pull around. Would have been an easy 6 here. D1 Play 8
Overall: -1
McNutt
+1 Solid route and positioning on the fade on the sideline. Uses his size to shield the smaller defender. D1 Play 5
+1 Does a great job tracking this ball in the air and makes it look very easy fo the TD. D2 Play 9
-1 Takes way to long to beat press here. Gets tied up by the smaller DB and needs better use of hands to free himself here. D3 Play 1
+1 Nice job adjusting to the back shoulder throw and he reaches back and snatches the ball for a big first down. D5 Play 3
+1 Great route running on the short side fade. Textbook job of leaving 4+ yards to the sideline and this is basically a free TD as JVB drops it in the big target zone. Great job snatching it as he boxed out the DB. D6 Play 9
Overall: +3
Keenan Davis
+1 Very easy TD here, as he ran the double move hitch and go here and his man bit hard on the hitch fake and he was all alone in the end zone. D9 Play 3
Overall: +1
Kevonte Martin-Manley
+1 Nice adjustment to the ball in the air and tracks it very well. Catches it with his hands away from his body and tucks it in and holds on. Very nice play. D1 Play 3
-1 Drops the ball on the out here. Was a well thrown ball and should have been an easy catch. Route was a bit rounded as well. D3 Play 2
+1 Great route here as he sells the outside release and then crosses back over his defender to the middle and breaks wide open showing some solid speed. D6 Play 6
+1 Very nice route here as he clears the underneath defender and pops into the hole in the zone. Nice route. D9 Play 2
Overall: +2
Canzeri
+1 Great speed to hole here as he beats the wash pursuit and picks up a big gainer. D10 Play 8
+1 Great job bouncing off tacklers here as he bursts up through the seam for a gain of 11. Solid running there. D10 Play 6
