GameFilm: All Three Defensive Group Evals

Thanks Gamefilm, very informative as usual.

Questions:

1. Should the coaching staff consider flipping Nielsen and Morris permanantly? Just wondering if Nielsens size might make him better suited for inside?

2. Some fans have speculated that Hyde might go into the draft this year.
A. Do you think he would be inclined to consider that option?
B. What type of grade would he get? Would he be drafted?

Looking forward to having Morris,Lowery, and Nardo back in the mix this week.

They should consider it. I know they have a lot invested in terms of practice hours put in in their respective positions, but Morris is not physical enough inside for MLB in the B10 right now.

1. Hard to say. The way Iowa uses their LEO I think Morris would be a pretty good fit there. His range is one of his best attributes at this point and he has shown some excellent chase and wrap skills. He does a good job jamming WRs and TEs when he gets the chance and thats another skill that a LEO in Iowa's system needs. Pure tools wise he was best suited to be the WLB in Iowa's system, but Kirksey is pretty clearly the guy there given his size and skills. Norm is old school and old school mentality is your MLB is your leader and pretty clearly Morris is a leader on and off the field. I'm not sure if they'd make that switch.

2.
a) I doubt he'd come out. He's a better football player than athlete and underclassman who fit that bill aren't usually high round values.
b) Late round/FA grade in my book at this point. As a CB, he's not shown me that he could be consistently effective in man coverage at the next level. He shows great instincts and ball skills but he'll struggle to run with upper-tier WRs at this point. Might project better as a safety and is a versatile guy having started a couple games at FS. Teams love players with experience at multiple positions and guys who provide special teams value. His draft value ceiling isn't going to be all that high due to limited natural speed and COD ability, but I think another year in college would do a lot for his draft stock.

No grades on Lowery? I thought he looked a little rusty, but NW was a good team to get experience against - they usually don't go down the field against IA, nor do their WR's usually have elite level speed. In general it was just good to see him out there.

As for the Morris to Leo and Nielsen to Mike, I'd prefer Morris at Will, Nielsen at Mike, and Kirksey at Leo. I think Kirksey's athleticism could really allow him to be special at that position, but I'm curious if the coaches don't trust him in coverage w/ his lack of experience. It's also good seeing some depth being built w/ Alston and Hitchens, and hopefully they get considerably more minutes the next 2 wks.

Lowery didn't have too many chances to make an impact. He made a couple of nice tackles on WRs after they made catches and showed some flashes of ability when covering his guy. Tools wise he's got good COD skills. Haven't seen him in man coverage situations enough yet to say how good his at reading routes or reading guys hips. If the coaches put him out there with a splint/cast on they must think awfully highly of him. Talked to him after the game some. Quiet and reserved kid. Definitely hadn't been in front of a camera before.

Lowery looked good on special teams in kick off coverage. Getting to the ball carrier from the edge and running him down from behind showed off his speed. He might be the answer to the "elusive quarterback" problem that has seemed to dog the defense this year. If BB continues to contain then bring Lowery from the edge. Could be spectacular...

+1 Great job running down the line and breaking up the option. Cleared the edge and blew up Colter on the pitch. Great physical football here. S9

Is it me or was Hyde spying Colter on this third down option. looked like he was locked in on Colter from the snap. So much for coaches not adjusting. ;)
