Game was lost when KF kicked the 20 yd FG

Knew we lose 9-6 after that kick. No offense all game, down 6, 4th qtr--You have to have the mentality that will be our last sniff of goal. Has to be 4-down area. Another case of KF's conservativeness costing us in 4th qtr. Even if you don't make it, they are pinned against goal line.

Kicking the FG was the right play at that point. We have had no success all year inside the 20. Take the points when you can.

I thought they were going for it no matter what after the 2nd down run. If you aren't going for it, you have to throw it on 2nd down.

Really? It sends a message to your offense that you have no confidence in them. Ferentz plays not to lose.

the offense had three shots to get it done from the 3. If they lacked confidence it was because they failed to get the job done not because we kicked on 4th down.

I doubt he does have confidence in them. You have to earn confidence.

If you had a kicker who had been missed five straight field goals, would you trot him out for a 48 yard attempt on 4th and 1 or go for it? There are times when you'd say screw it let's try to get him some confidence. There are other times when you got to do the smart thing. Like cut the lead to a fg.

I agree. The way the game was going Iowa needed to score a TD.

Yeah, its not a confidence issue, its a coaches decision making issue. On the play calls for the first 3 downs and for not deciding to go for it on 4th.

It's a combination. The players had chances to make plays today and didn't. How many dropped passes were there? How many poor passes did Vandy have?

Dude. Weisman dropped a td pass on third down. The play calling was fine. The coaching was fine.

I'll go along with your thought for a sec. You go for it on 4th, and don't get it. ISU gets the ball back. Say they go down and scores (TD or FG-doesn't matter). Now you're down 2 scores.
Nah - take the points.

I turned to my friends after 3rd down and told my friends that if you kick it, we would be alright. You have to go for that. The way both offenses struggled, especially ISU in the 2nd half.

Even if you guys didn't get that 4th down, we probably would have went 3 and out.

Good game. Horrible game to watch. Only got two cans thrown at us at the end of the game. Can't complain about your fans today.

Thanks all. Kinnick is a great atmosphere.

I could see calling it either way actually, so I don't have a big complaint on this. Take your points and try for a tying field goal is your first option. On fourth down you might try to score and if you fail leave Iowa State inside their own five yard line. That isn't such an awful strategy given Janz propensity for throwing interceptions under pressure.

I didn't like the power run up the middle on second down. THe third down play rolling the QB out to the right was more appropriate on second down than third. If that failed on a second down passing play you have a lot of plays available on third down.

Down 9-3 in 4th qtr, you need a TD to win, right? You drive all the way down the field to get inside 5. You kick a 20-yd FG, you STILL need a TD to win.
What's worse, if you kick a FG, you give the opposing team the ball back on the 25 yd line instead of the 2. Not too mention your offense had done NOTHING right all day-safe to assume that was going to continue.

That all being said, we all KNEW KF (easily being the most gutless coach in college or pro ball) was going to kick the FG.

The game was lost when we decided to run off tackle to short side of the field on first and second and goal, and then run a play action on 3rd down (as if anyone would be fooled by it). Iowa's goalline offense is the exact same offense it runs on 2nd and 8 from the 50.

Iowa could have gone 5 wide and ran a QB draw b/c ISU completely and utterly ignored the possibility of JVB running everytime we went to that formation.

Exactly. Everybody in the stadium knew it was going to be a run, and ISU was stacked to stop it. That play had zero chance at succeeding.
