Game 1 Takes

1. Cook. He really struggled last night. What I noticed in the Exhibition and last night, is that he's not really letting the game come to him. If he catches the ball in the post it appears he predetermined that he's going to put his head down and try to score, I think he needs to do a better job of taking what the defense gives him, if they come to help move the ball and repost. I think last night was a good wake up call for him. I'm not overly concerned he will be great.

2. Williams. I think we got our PG boys. I love the way he gets two feet in the lane and then looks to kick or make the correct pass. That's the mindset of a PG. I hope he keeps shooting 3s when they present themselves and can knock a few down. That will be huge for this team. Also, like what Jordan has shown coming off the bench. His mindset should be no turnovers and shoot 3s when he's in there.

3. Defense. We should press a little less than we do. It seems like we give up so many easy baskets when we press. In the half court, our length alone makes us pretty decent defensively.

4. Rebounding. I think we really need to improve here, but I think between Cook, Wagner, Uhl, and the other bigs we can.

Overall, some positives some negatives, sounds like we might have a fast paced game Sunday.

I wonder if we pressed more than normal just to work on it?

Jok looks way better than last year. If he keeps this up, he will lead the Big 10 in scoring and be an All American.

If Pemsl can start finishing, he will be like Greg Brunner. He seems to be able to use his body to get to the rim at least equally as good as Cook.

There is all this talk about Cook (and rightfully so) but Wagner looks just like Cook. That guy is unbelievably quick and powerful to the rim. We have a serious 3 headed monster with Cook, Wagner, and Pemsl.

Williams looks like an upgrade at point right now. I know it's early but he looks very in control and he can do things Mike simply couldn't. If he keeps improving as the year goes on we will make the dance.

I believe Fran when he says Kriener is the best rebounder on the team. A couple times he really went after and got a rebound that wasn't his. He takes up a lot of space.

I honestly don't know what Fran is going to do with minutes this year. Jones was out this game and now he's saying Dailey will play tomorrow. It's crazy to think that our 12th or 13th guy would probably start on his first team here. I know someone has to leave to make room but I don't even know who I want it to be.

Full disclosure... I didn't get to see the game and Kriener only played 7 minutes but scored 6 points in that time. I've seen Kriener play a handful of times and he's a hard worker. As you mentioned with Wagner, Cook and Cordell we should have a good young core of big men already but I think Kriener can provide some value as well so we'll be plenty deep in bigs here in the next few years with Garza and Nunge.

He definitely looked like he fit in. I see why he didn't redshirt but I have no idea how Fran will make everyone happy.

1-Cook struggled to get in the flow of the game. He's a freshman, that happens.
2-Baer also was pretty quiet.
3-Wagner looked quick, sharp, and strong. Defensively, he was a beast at the rim.
4-Williams looked pretty good. A few head scratching TO's but that will happen with the pace Iowa plays.
5-Jok? Wow. Lights out. I remember as a freshman his defense was flat out pathetic. He looks like a 1st team all B1G lock right now.
6-Uhl- Not really impressed with him. Haven't seen much improvement out of him since he got here.
7- Pemsl- I see great potential in this kid. Seems like he understands the game and he's got the foundation of a solid B1G body.
8-Ellingson-...........uh, yeah. You thinking what I'm thinking? I thought so.
9-Kriener- a project. Could be serviceable down the road though.
10- Jones- A got a bad feeling his knees are just not going to allow him to ever be the player he could be.
11- Dailey- No read on him yet.
12- Bohannon- Love this kid's quick trigger. Great looking stroke.

Thumbs up players
Cook, Wagner, Williams, Jok, Pemsl, Bohannon

I kind of feel like, maybe giving more time to guys out of state, that you want to keep, and letting the guy's that have always wanted to don the jersey spend a little more time on the bench. I know it's not a great idea, but the future looks bright regardless.

I see the logic there.

Do you think we can play Kennesaw State every week? I'm concerned coming out of that game about turnovers at the guard position. When we step up in class, pressure on the guards ramps up significantly. I really think Jones is a key this year...we need another 3 point guy who can stretch the defense...and pull them out. With room to operate down low, Cook, Wagner, and Pemsl look like they have some skills around the basket. I was considerably underwhelmed with Cook on the offensive end last night...but first games will do that to you sometimes...he wants to perform...and just needs to settle down and play. I haven't really seen pemsl play that much...he's pretty smooth around the basket...as one poster said...he just needs to finish. Wagner has made a leap and now it's just seeing if he can do it when the lights come on against a big time opponent.

We will find out where we are vs Seton Hall. But all year we will see lots of variation in this teams performance. Should be fun!

i think that if wagner can develop a 10-15 jumper, he will be a double digit scorer this season and that, along with cook performing the way we assume he will, will help jok (potentially) lead the B1G in scoring. I agree on pemsl. he needs to change his body type, but i can see him becoming a definite low block threat, in the future. and cook does need to slow down a bit and not force things so much, without changing his aggressive attitude.

I also think uhl is regressing. he looks a bit moody and uninspired, at times. i do like it when he has the ball in his hands and drives to the rim. i liked that he did that from the top of the key a couple of times. that, to me, is uhl's game. let him do it.

williams is our pg and i think JB might sneak in as 2g if he can connect on his 3 ball. but JB will struggle at pg in the B1G, this season. but we have no choice but to use him. he'll get better.

It's only one game but our defense was horrendous in the second half. Baer had issues keeping his guy in front of him. I thought Moss looked like heded has something to offer - much more than Ellengson. Tired of seeing Uhl, play Kreiner instead. Cook struggled offensively. Like Cordell but cannot but cannot get off the floor. Lots of improvement needed.

I am certain that the team you see now won't even be a shadow of the team we will see when we get into conference play. It usual takes about seven or eight games before momentum sets in and player get a feel for what role each will play. Watching that development will be interesting to see.
