From The Mouths Of Dolph And Eddie

Wasn't a popular decision amongst the fans when Iowa punted on fourth and inches from midfield, but couldn't argue with the results when Taylor pinned the Gophs at the one yard line.

Comment from Gary and Ed on the air: "It shows that Kirk would rather have Minnesota with the ball on their own one than have Iowa with the ball at midfield."

Pretty much sums up the philosophy that I've posted several dozen times the past three years. As a unaesthetic as it looks, it has proven to be effective more often than not. Yesterday was one of those days where it was not.

Three other takes from yesterday.

1) we lost the time of possession battle again by a wide margin, almost eleven minutes. And still lost the turnover battle 3 to 0. Not going to win many games losing both time of possession AND turnovers. Even elite defenses will eventually wear down if continually on the field that much.

2) Why for God's sake was Patterson used in short yardage situations, and lined up in a deep I formation for good measure? That was a run blitz just waiting to happen.

3) Wisconsin was on the ropes yesterday at Illinois with a backup QB, but found a way. With the game and perhaps season on the line, Fiekell dug into his bag of tricks and dialed up a TD pass to a tackle eligible.

Would love to have seen a similar short yardage play at the hallowed halls of Kinnick yesterday. Minnesota would have been a sucker for it

When you are the worst offense in the whole of Division One why on earth wouldn't you have a gadget play in your bag of tricks? This is embarrassing to the fans and to the head coach and the OC.

Something. Anything.
I'd settle for an outside run attempt at this point. That would be terribly exciting for a change.

what happend to the team that played fast and loose with OSU in '17? Since then we've gone so conservative that its like were our offfense is stuck in the 1940s.
