Fresh blood needed in Iowa City
Turn the page on Todd Lickliter returning for the 2010-11 season. Yesterday, AD Gary Barta announced that Lickliter will not be the men's basketball coach next season.
The difficult part of such a decision is that Iowa has a really talented team on tap for 2010-11. Besides freshman Cully Payne, Matt Gatens and Aaron Fuller return. The nucleus of the future Hawkeye squad is composed of all underclassmen. Furthermore, Iowa 's 2010 recruiting class could be considered one of the tops in the conference if it stays intact. It's headlined by PF Cody Larson and guard Ben Brust.
However, with no Lickliter, it will be interesting to see if the new Iowa coach can hold on to those commitments.
The first name most pundits came up with is Northern Iowa 's Ben Jacobson. The two-time Missouri Valley coach of the year says he's not considering it, but the Cedar Falls Courier has some eye-opening numbers that might pique his interest. "(Jacobson) signed a contract extension last summer that upped his annual salary to nearly $290,000," wrote columnist Kelly Beaton. "Lickliter, who arrived at Iowa after winning the 2007 NABC national coach of the year award with Butler , earned a reported $1.2 million per year during his tenure in Iowa City ."
As interesting as those numbers might be to a mid-major coach, they seem paltry when talk of luring Bruce Pearl comes up. The Twitterati are skeptical: "@goodmanonfox: Iowa may want Bruce Pearl. However, it's highly unlikely that he wants Iowa ." We're also skeptical. But it never hurts to ask, we suppose.
If anyone in Knoxville is aware of any Iowa interest, they're keeping it mum at the moment.
The Des Moines Register raises some interesting names for the Iowa gig, including Richmond 's Chris Mooney, Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg and Dayton 's Brian Gregory.
* Bruce Pearl - A favorite of midwestern pundits.
* Brad Stevens - Does Stevens become the next Butler coach to take his gig to the Big Ten?
* Ben Jacobson - UNI coach has built an extremely successful program in the Valley; seems to be the only popular DI coach in the state.
* Joe Dooley - Kansas assistant has been a potential candidate for every single coaching vacancy in 2010 (or so it seems).
* Daniyal Robinson - Iowa State assistant was on the short list to replace Jim Crews at Army.
* Tim Jankovich - Star Osiris Eldridge is graduating and with heavy rebuilding project in front of him at Illinois State, may want to take the next step.
* Brad Soderberg - Former Saint Louis coach landed in the NAIA and could be a breath of air.
* Brian Gregory - The Dayton head coach has built a contender in the A-10, but could do more with Iowa 's resources.
* Paul Lusk - Purdue asst. is little-known, but could be the right fit.
* Chris Mooney - Nabbed a high seed for Richmond this season. A hot name for sure.
* Seth Greenberg - Virginia Tech head coach may grow tired of being ACC stepchild.
