Wonder if he is rethinking that decision right about now. Oregon is going to get their you know what cut off. It appears the school itself was actually paying for players. Not even smart enough to use a booster.
What's the nutshell version of that? Explain the "paid for old information" part and why it's illegal.
It's the relationship that the guy who runs that service has with guys like LaMichael James. It appears as though it could be a "buy this from me, and I'll funnel my guys to you". The service would appear to simply be an attempt to make the transactions look legitimate.
Or it could be they were paying this Lyles dude and he then gave some of the money to the player. If you read any of the articles on this situation, its clear it stinks to high hell. 25K for a book of players that were seniors.....the year before!! Further, all of the profiles were essentially copied from other recruiting sites. Its dumbfounding. Since the "book" was obviously worthless, what was Oregon paying for? The Seastrunk kid they got was extremely close to Lyles (apparently lived with his mother during the kid's senior year) and had offers from every single top flight school. Interetesting he ends up in Eugene.

That sort of thing is not easy to prove, and will likely not result in sanctions of any kind. It's the relationship that the guy who runs that service has with guys like LaMichael James. As far as the old information bit goes: I'm guessing that the outdated info, combined with the fact that the "national" recruiting service pretty much only covered guys from Texas, really makes it look like a sham. Nothing actually illegal about it, just circumstantial evidence (But given the guy's relationship with James, it seems like fairly strong circumstantial evidence.).
It smells bad for sure. Didn't change French's mind, he's already there. I've also heard that Oregon is the destination for Andre Dawson. From what I heard he's going to spend one semester at juco then head out to play with his cousin, French.
Oregon will just claim this book was a sample of what they would be getting from him. Someone at Nike will crank out a similiar looking book with up to date profiles on 2011 prospects and have it on the desk of the NCAA by Monday. Problem solved.
That still leaves the question of the money. Why on earth would Oregon pay 25k for an absolutely worthless sample?
I mean why would they pay for something like that before they were sure of the quality of what they were getting? Unless, by paying for it, the DID know what kind of quality they were getting, if you catch my drift.
So he's not at UNI anymore, then?
Nope. His transfer was announced last spring.
